This is just a quick rant among friends. Now I can’t drag files from Dolphin to Audacious. Audacious acts like I’ve not dragged anything to it and when the mouse goes back to Dolphin the files are still being dragged. I can’t keep living with these basic problems after every update. I feel like I need to write this out to the ether in order to push myself to finally sack Plasma off. I have very limited time at home and I feel like I’m wasting my life with these trivial problems.
I need to install Cinnamon in EOS and just be done with it.
Dolphin should be treated as an integral part of Plasma if it ships with it and so far I’ve had nothing but problems with it. I’m already on the fence with KDE in general after my stint with Kontact and Kmail which are worthless with any Arch based system as KDE just blame Arch for it’s issues with not being able to see the network is active again after a sleep. This is really what I was asking for, to be pushed away from Plasma.
I see that it is in Extra. I will give it a shot. At least once I get used to it I can be less reliant on any one DE or it’s related apps. I still won’t be able to drag stuff to Audacious but I will probably replace that with a terminal based app at some point to. Thanks pal and thanks to dbarronoss. At first I was put off by your comment but all problems in life come back to me.
The point is Dolphin and Audacious did work perfectly. I don’t want to keep having to change my workflow due to bugs. I am however already enjoying nnn for individual song selection. Next step will be a terminal player which there are a few in the new apps thread. KDE constantly runs before it can walk IMO.
What I’ve enjoyed about it is that, not only does it work nicely out of the box, but it’s actually quite customizable.
As for copying files from one directory to another (was your original frustration?), if you type a number from 1 to 4, you get up to four simultaneous views of different directories… Space bar will toggle highlight file(s), then go to the target directory # again and hit p for ‘paste’ a copy or ‘v’ for move the file (= cut and paste).
Hitting qwill close any one of those 4 different directory views.
It works fine for me now as well but it’s too late. It didn’t work 10 times in a row. I haven’t updated or restarted. It’s either an issue with the mouse or wayland or dolphin. It doesn’t really matter now. I cba with Dolhpin anymore, it looks flashy but I’ve had numerous problems with it and they were all on KDE bugs so it’s not just me. I’m going back to XFCE while I regroup and plan ahead. I only started using Plasma because I was having internet issues and didn’t want to do online install. Those issues are now fixed, touch wood.
Actually what I wanted to do was add files to audacious playlist but that is still useful information. I can live without that for now. Right now I have audacious in system tray so I don’t even have to see it. I can just play stuff from nnn. This is just mostly just a dukebox machine.
You can just drag and drop files from a file manager into the playlist window in Audacious.
It’s always worked for me in the past and now it started working again. It just wouldn’t let go of the file as I was dragging it into the playlist widow for some reason. Silly little glitch that just wound me up as I wanted to add the rest of an album to the first song I played and now I’ve spent 30 minutes reinstalling EOS with XFCE. I don’t think I will be going back to Plasma, at least not on a rolling distro anyway. Every week it’s something else, only small little issues but they start to grate.
That’s useful to know that you can use -e to enqueue though. I will definitely been needing that info going forward. Thanks.
You need to do what works for you. You mentioned Kmail/Kontact, which are, frankly, not great, and I dropped them years ago because the whole “Akonadi” semantic desktop paradigm was a half-baked panacea. Dolphin is great when it serves the use cases you have. Clearly it’s not doing that. Sounds like you’re looking for a reason to drop KDE. No sweat. XFCE is a great choice, use what works for you.
Indeed, despite the features added in new versions, KDE still suffers from various bugs.
For example, in the splash screen or theme section, where you can download various themes from the internet, the installation isn’t properly marked. The same thing happens to me with downloaded widgets.
I’ve also always had problems with downloaded splash screens with Wayland; they often aren’t displayed, and sometimes you download them and then can’t find them in the splash screen.
I’ve noticed that some widgets placed on the desktop block access at startup: you end up with a desktop bar gone. I ended up removing them.
And even with the latest version 6.5.5, sometimes when I restart, I find the app icons on the desktop have all moved around, and this is a bug that should theoretically have been fixed by now.
In short, for many things, or for general use, KDE Plasma can be very convenient to use, but it still has several bugs that need fixing.
Little strange thread, but I will say this: Yes, KDE on Arch Linux is indeed inferior to KDE on a static release distro, like MX Linux. At least, for me.
I use KDE on both MX Linux and Archcraft, and I’ve noticed that it’s much faster on MX Linux, and less buggy.
And another strange thing: KDE Wayland on Archcraft is faster and has more features in the System Settings than KDE X11 on the same system. Weird. Yet, on MX Linux, the speed difference is not noticeable and none of the settings are missing in either Wayland or X11.
The only thing from KDE 6.5 (Arch) that I am missing from KDE 6.3 (Debian) is the advanced build-in file renamer that Dolphin has. It makes KRenamer almost useless.
PS: I remember someone saying that Arch users are basically bug testers for KDE, and this is true for most things on Linux.
Thanks for treating this post as it was meant, just a bit of a release. I wasn’t meaning to start any arguments or anything and I’m glad that hasn’t happened. Music is one of my main enjoyments in life and I really hate having computer issues get in the way of that. I’d love a proper HiFi but I don’t have space for computer speakers and dedicated music ones, so I use my PC to play music.
I’m now using a terminal audio player called Cmus and I will see how that goes. I’m definitely not a terminal junkie or anything but the way Cmus enqueues files is exactly what I need.
I’ll stick with nnn also. Terminal centric. One day maybe I will start tiling….
