Does the installer work, like, ever?

Good day, everyone.

I have just assembled a fresh Framework 13 laptop, and this is my second ever EndeavourOS install. In the past, I encountered issues on a different machine and gave up. Currently, I cannot even get past the keyboard layout screen, as the installer invariably “hangs” at some point while I’m trying to choose the correct layout for my machine. Is there something wrong with the current release of the OS? I am considering just going with Arch, because I’m very tired of wasting my time every time I attempt to install this distribution.

I can assure you that is NOT the case. If there was a major problem with the installer (Calamares), this forum would be flooded with topics/threads regarding it.

I guess it’s a case of PEBCAK then.

What I always do before installing any Linux:

  • get latest Firmware,
  • disable Secure Boot.

And may be re-download iso file in case the downloaded file is corrupt.

I wasn’t going to assume that, but it’s a possibility. Perhaps there are logs you can provide so someone can assist in diagnosing your issue.

EDIT:
Or better yet, follow @PeterRies’s advice and see if that helps.

Sorry to hear that your installation experience has been frustrating — that’s never a great first impression, especially on new hardware.

To clarify, there isn’t a known general issue with the current ISO. We put a lot of effort into testing each release across a wide range of hardware and installation scenarios to make sure it works reliably for most users. That said, individual setups can still behave unexpectedly, and we’d really like to help figure out what’s happening in your case.

If you’re open to it, could you share a bit more detail about how you created the installer media (tool used, ISO checksum verification, USB stick, etc.)? If the installer produces a log before or after the hang, that would also be very helpful. With that information, it’s usually possible to track down the cause fairly quickly.

For reference, I’m personally running EndeavourOS on a Framework 13 as well and regularly perform test installs on that device using the current released ISO, without issues. That’s why additional details from your setup would be especially valuable here.

We appreciate you giving EndeavourOS another try, and we’re happy to work with you to get this sorted — no time wasted if we can turn it into a solved issue together

And now everyone dancing some Kumbaja

Without disabling Secure Boot, it’s not even possible to boot via USB  At least in my case

Post the installer logsto give someone a chance of helping you,

Problem is, I cannot do anything after the “hang” happens. The cursor still moves around the screen, but apart from that the keyboard and touchpad become unresponsive. That means I cannot use any of the GUI or reach the terminal, and I have to force-shutdown the machine. I will try with another USB drive (I am using Rufus with a very ancient USB stick), and I will try updating the BIOS, as I did indeed forget to do that.

rufus is no good to use, known to cause issues.
best method is still using dd but i was also like many others mainly use ventoy, if you take care to have always the latest ventoy on the stick, and make sure the ISO file is fully written too it does a good job.. more details here:

And if interested i have a page on running EndeavourOS on the Framework 13:

Thank you, I really appreciate that! I will give it a try.

Update: the BIOS update doesn’t work for me (I could not update the BIOS), and switching to another USB with Ventoy resulted in the same “hang” at the keyboard layout selection screen. So I cannot install this OS, I guess. Fun.

Could this be an issue with hid_sensor_hub?

Workaround: Install Arch then add EndeavourOS repos. :thought_balloon::brain:

i do not think there is any real issue.. just did an install of Gnome with current ISO from a venztoy usb stick. is yours another CPU? As mine is the AMD Ryzen™ 7 7840U ?

Which layout are you selecting?

you have windows installed in addition? Or how you tried updating the Bios?

question is why it is freezing at all, very uncommon on such powerfull device, and even more one tested on many Distros already.

For me ISO Livesession is working snappy same as installed OS.

And most issue with freezing installer or issues running it, are related to corruption of the ISO or changed boot process.

If not possible to get installer log it would be helping to see the bootlog before starting the installer.
journalctl -b -0 | eos-sendlog

And share the URL.

I have the latest Framework Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. This is the exact hardware configuration, I can also provide links to RAM and SSD if necessary.

I’ve tried many. After some time (ranging from 30s to ~180s) on the keyboard layout selection screen, the touchpad controls (except cursor movement) and keyboard stop working altogether, preventing me from progressing with the installer, or accessing logs, or even exiting the Live USB environment.
