Do I really have to install multiple desktop enviroments or is there another to debug my issue?

Hello World,

I’ve had this problem since the begining of switching to Linux and it’s finally pissed me off enough that I’m ready to tackle it. So I went to Lutris forums to ask for help, if you want the full story please check out the thread there.

The short version is I am having some problems in windowed games with either game elements getting cut off or with black bars, if you want to see it in action check out this short video.

After some back and forth on the Lutris forum they’ve come to the conclusion that I should try another desktop manager(specifically Gnome) as my problem might be a bug in KDE Plasma that I would have to report to them?

Thing is from what I’ve searched it seems using multiple desktop enviroments can cause issues? Haven’t been able to find many specifics, mostly stuff like:

Would really love it if I could get some clarification on that, what exactly would these “little issues all over the place” entail. Is there any risk of data loss or having to end up needing to completly reinstall the OS or crap like that?

And what specifics I did find I did not understand, like:

what the heck does that mean…? Isn’t this just something I can choose at bootup, why would multiple users be involved?!

In the end if I do really have to go this route are there any resources I can read up on about exactly how to do this(installation and stuff) properly?
The only link I was able to find(to a wiki I guess?) posted here on the forums, aka
https://endeavouros.com/docs/pacman/desktop-managers/

gives me this beautiful little thing

And searches both there and on google haven’t turned up anything, or maybe I am just using the wrong search terms… :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Help pretty please?!

Thank you.

I hate GNOME with a passion and don’t really have issues with KDE with regards to games that I play. However, that’s all opinion and roulette on the games I favor. I would have fairly major doubts that it’s a DE issue but more likely a proton/wine issue that will occur in ALL DEs using those versions of the software.
They’re right, it’s not a great idea to use more than one full featured DE per installation. I would recommend either trying it from another installation (where you will probably see no difference) or under a WM (far less likely to mess up your install) than a DE.
As always, it’s your system, you’re free to break it if you wish :0

To clarify here, this is speaking of user accounts (aka, profiles), not specifically individual people. So you as a single user, might have two different user accounts, one you use for KDE Plasma, the other you use for Gnome.

eg:

/home/vikingskde
/home/vikingsgnome

This just ensures that profile data doesn’t clash, as it would if you used one account to sign into both desktop environments. It keeps things separate, and behaving in a more civil manner

As for the games issue, maybe it’s KDE. Maybe it’s a KDE setting. Maybe a fresh user account under KDE won’t have the issue. Could it be Wayland / X11? If the issue goes away on Gnome, it may not necesarily be KDE, it could be a profile issue (hence trying a fresh user account under KDE).

Just some thoughts…

Ok, on the clarification part I’m still a bit fuzzy, specifically this part

/home/vikingskde
/home/vikingsgnome

does this mean I need more space/new partitions?

As for the last part thank you for reminding me of x11, I always forget about that looool. Sadly I switched to x11 and tried and the behavior was exactly the same… :sob:

Sigh, ok then again I ask, please please please people is there anything else I can do(apart from what I’ve already done as suggested by the good folks on the Lutris forum) to try and nail down why this might is happening/what the issue is? Things that are maybe simpler then trying to install a whole new/fresh desktop enviroment?

yes create a new account on your PC. Do not make any Setting changes and just try to play your game. If the game plays just fine then there is a Setting Issue and not a DE issue. If you still have problems then you could try another DE. I would be weary of putting two DE’s on the same system. As you have read they can create issues.

Right. Ok, I created a new user, logged into it, didn’t change a single thing, heck didn’t even open any program I didn’t need to, just fired up Lutris installed one of those games again in this new users /home dir and tried it.
Same behavior…! :sob: :sob: :sob: :sob:
(plus I had a little scare as when I tried to switch back I got a “no video ouput” thingy from my monitor and I ended up having to shut down my pc from the power button)

So… what now…?

webpage changed for the wiki:

https://discovery.endeavouros.com/pacman/desktop-managers/2021/03/

Got it, thank you. Though I have to say reading that it makes it seem even more intimidating/complicated then what I had imagined. Or maybe it’s just me…

also not really related to your issue Desktop Managers are only to login to the Desktop …

In case of issues with mutiple Desktop environments… the Big ones interfere in some parts… but some very simple like Fluxbox do not use much setup you can install sudo pacman -Syu fluxbox and login from sddm Desktop Manager aside KDE with the same user. MAy you need to run the game from terminal or you will need to add a Desktop Menu https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fluxbox

running fluxbox-generate_menu (most appsmwill be in) inside fluxbox session and restart it to get a Menu holding all installed apps… (right click menu on the desktop) or to get all apps in the menu better this:

sudo pacman -S menumaker
mmaker -f --no-legacy --no-debian FluxBox

Ok… well, before I go @joekamprad 's route with Fluxbox let me ask you guys something that has been suggested on the Lutris forum before for other issues, but I never really wanted to do it because of the 2 reasons below, but could changing my video drivers help with this issue?

  1. If yes the first reason I didn’t wanna do it before is because I remember @dalto helped me quite a while ago, right at the begining of switching to Linux to install the mesa-amdonly-gaming-git and lib32-mesa-amdonly-gaming-git versions due to a problem I had with a game that I think got fixed as a result of that.(don’t remember what problem or which game anymore… :stuck_out_tongue: )

  2. It’s intimidating/confusing as hell, if I type yay amd I get a list that is 319 items long, and if I enter yay amd driver I get a list that is still 72 items long…

So with which packages exactly should I replace those mesa ones?

Here’s the entire ouput of yay amd so you can see everything I have installed, if it helps:

yay -Syu mesa-amdonly-gaming-git lib32-mesa-amdonly-gaming-git would install these and will ask you to remove the original packages its is conflicting with… plus installing needed other dependencies…

Well yeah, but I already have those installed, I am asking what to replace them with? :slightly_smiling_face:

ah to went back to defaults …

amdonly-gaming-mesa-git lib32-amdonly-gaming-mesa-git
they replacing/conflicting

sudo pacman -Syu lib32-vulkan-mesa-layers vulkan-mesa-layers

so basically installing these 2 should ask to remove them…
Always have a look at what the package manager say to you exactly… in case unclear ask…

Well changed them, sadly that did nothing, same behavior with the games, so I guess it’s time to try a new DE… :fearful:

Question, if I combine what @thefrog taught me and create a new user, then install flux in this new user like @joekamprad said, will that decrease the risk even more? Or it really doesn’t matter which user I use with Flux?

User account wont have a difference. Fluxbox is a simple windows manager and not a Full DE. You could probably use any WM for this. A WM is a much smaller program than a DE so not as many moving parts. The user in this case really doesn’t matter.

:frowning:
Ok, one last question then(probably a dumb one) before I decide what do do:
If Fluxbox is just “a simple windows manager” and since @Bink pointed out the importance of “freshness” how about I just reclaim 100gb from my new gaming partition and simply install EnadeavourOS again on that space??? It ain’t getting no more fresh then that!!

So… how retarded of a question it that considering I already have this version of EOS and a version of winshit installed on the same ssd? For example how would I know which version of linux to boot into? Or worse how would I know which is the testing one when it comes to deleting those partitions to get my space back?! :stuck_out_tongue:

you can run fluxbox and KDE on the same system. The window manager will be its own clean environment. Its just like logging into a new Desktop. The main difference is Fluxbox is a solitary program where a DE is multiple programs.

Ok, and what about my dual booting(or triple if you include winshit) EndeavouroS idea? Is that easy, hard, stupid to even ask, or what?

Cause to be honest I would much rather take the 20 mins or so to install a new EOS that I can mess up in any way I like and not give a little rats ass since I’m gonna be deleting it at the end of the day anyway. Heck in theory I could delete and resintall it as many times as I wish and try ever DE under the sun, so long as the one that I am using now stays safe… no?

installing fluxbox will run on the same boot as your DE the way to go into your Fluxbox is through the Login Manager (in this case SDDM) When you get to your login screen there is a gear you can hit that will allow you to change the Session. You will change the session from KDE to Fluxbox, Nothing to do with you boot.

for this yes you would have to do a install on a Separate partition than the system you are on now. That is where you will need to worry about the boot. (multiboot)

Ok great, then if Fluxbox doesn’t fix anything I’ll just look into adding another EOS and try gnome, fresh plasma and whatever else.

Time for my hour of exercise then I’ll get into it. Wish me luck!
(eh, I say hour, but it’s mostly breaks in between a bit of sweating here and there…)
