DistroTube's Top 5 Arch Based Distros

I’m not too impressed with the video, to be honest… It’s certainly not terrible. At least he is fair in saying that he has no experience with it and he is wise enough to know that he can’t tell anyone what is best for them.

Otherwise, the video has a share of inaccuracies we see in almost all YouTube videos, perhaps less than most. Nothing too dangerous, but a lot of nitpicky details. Like Timeshift is not for backup, for example… The video also claims, without any evidence, that Manjaro provides “additional stability”, whatever that means… He clearly does not make a distinction between stability as in “frequency of updates” versus “frequency of something getting broken”, and the two notions are constantly confused.

And he totally missed the Onlyoffice point, should have given Manjaro a harder time for including proprietary adware in default installation. EDIT: This is false, see the post below…

Onlyoffice is open source.

Thanks for the correction, I must have confused it with something else. I’ve edited my post.

They used to ship “free office.”

I could listen to OTB videos all day long. DT is annoying and rambles on an on IMHO. I don’t follow anyone but i have listened to lots of different videos on Arch based distros and others if it’s something I’m interested in. Nothing against DT i just don’t like his style.

I recently found a nice place for Distro Reviews. It is the Linux User Space Pocast. They release two podcasts a month. On one podcast they do a distro review of the distro they use for an entire month and on the other, they go into detail about a Linux related topic like wayland, flatpaks etc. I have also discovered several nice apps through their show.

The only non-arch-based distro that I do love and use as my daily is Archlinux

Among the arch-based distros, EndeavourOS is my favourite.

Arch is still Arch based. . .

That’s like saying" I built a Ford Mustang, with Ford parts." So, while it’s clearly already a Ford, to say it’s anything other than “Ford based” would seem ridiculous.

Or a better question, if Arch isn’t Arch based. . . What is it?

That is somewhat of a single-cycle chicken and egg dilemma.

I love this Gödel-Escher-Bach style of self-referentiality…

It can lead to a whole discussion

I see it like a House/Pyramid/Tent/what_ever_building.

And they all are based on ground. And you didnt say “a House is based on a House”.

On Manjaro for example:

House: Manjaro
Ground: Arch

Or for Mambox

House: Mambox
Ground: Manjaro

Or for EndeavourOS:

Orbital: Endeavouros
Ground: Arch

Yep you right, that came exactly in my mind too.

Arch is an independent distro. It can’t be based on itself…

Arch is an independent GNU plus Linux distribution?

Arch Linux is an independently developed, x86-64 general-purpose GNU/Linux distribution

It’s based on the most basic of things - the Linux kernel like 30 years ago. Which was originally written on either a Mac or PC initially. …

So Arch is. . . Microsoft based?

Nice interjection, btw!

This rabbit hole is absurdly deep.

It’s so deep it causes a stack overflow.

The distro reviews in the Linux User Space podcast always start with an extensive review of the distribution’s history. I found this to be unique among Linux topic podcasts. One might think this to be a boring aspect but it is actually quite interesting.

I find the history part very interesting. One Episode I liked was the review of Garuda Linux and its history. They also did a history of Arch Linux which was also very well done.

Thanks for the tip! Bookmarking Linux User Space now…

I feel like @archbtw is just trolling all of us and trying to piss some of us off.
