Davinci resolve is bork

Hello there, i came here as a last resort after scouring the internet for tips and working with GPT to fix davinci resolve, its broken right now, the UI doesnt work when i try to work into a new project and i’m wondering why ,

The dependencies are installed and GPT doesnt help whilst searching what’s causing the issue, i didn’t need help so far but now i’m kinda desperate :crying_cat:
Since davinci cut it’s source zip from the AUR i had to fetch it from their website and mooved it into the temp files of yay for it to install and it’s not working, what should be my first step ?

Run DaVinci Resolve via command line, and see if it gives you any useful errors:

/opt/resolve/bin/resolve

You can also review the log files:
~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve/logs/ResolveDebug.txt
~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve/logs/resolve_graphics_log.txt

If you see anything that looks like a useful error, that would be a starting point.

Had you successfully been using DaVinci Resolve prior to the version 20 update, which is only recent?

no this is my first time using it on the last version

This is the output of the terminal when launching davinci from here:

Nothing noticable to me

What is your system spec @Raohsty?

inxi -SMc --za

I just recalled that some of us have encountered issues running DaVinci Resolve with an AMD GPU. I shared what fixed that for me, here:

My GPU is an nvidia 4060

GPT was saying that KDE could break the software but even switching from wayland to x11 didnt fix

I somehow missed the G on that inxi command, thank you for mentioning your GPU, that was important

Could you share the output of:

yay -Q | grep nvidia

nvidia-dkms 570.144-3
nvidia-hook 1.5.2-1
nvidia-inst 25.4.11-1
nvidia-utils 570.144-3
opencl-nvidia 570.144-3
Are These are the versions of the nvidia drivers ?

Because i did the update before installing davinci if i recall correctly

They are the version numbers, but I was primarily just checking what type of Nvidia driver you were using, and that nvidia-utils and opencl-nvidia were installed.

The only consideration there was you might think about using the nvidia-open-dkms driver instead of nvidia-dkms, but I wouldn’t expect that to fix DaVinci Resolve, it’s more of a future proofing issue as the nvidia-dkms will eventually be phased out.

Let’s backtrack a little because everything else seems to otherwise be fine on your system. Can you provide a screenshot and/or describe the issue a bit more please?

Just as a note, your BIOS version is three behind. Recent updates have improved system performance and stability.

A screenshot wont do much unfortunately, the UI inside of the software is completely frozen, navbar seems to be displaying alright but i can’t access functionnalities like importing media, which GPT told that was python related , so i reinstalled python and it didnt fix it , the main issue is that any operation that i try outside of the navbar fails :smiling_face_with_tear: How do i manage bios upgrades by the way ? is there a way to update it via linux ?

Have you tried starting within an X11 session (assuming you’re currently using Wayland)?

Yeah i tried that, one of the first clue GPT told me , still broken :frowning:

Ok, crazy idea, perhaps try creating a new user account, log into Plasma with that and see if DaVinci Resolve behaves?

It didnt change the main issue, but i realised that the problem narrows down to a single thing, i cant import neither mkv and mp4 but importing images is fine for some reason and then i can moove the slider and do stuff so it’s just importing video that dont work

What audio and video codecs are those files using?

The free version of DaVinci Resolve can’t import H.264 or H.265 video. Neither free or Studio version can import AAC audio. It doesn’t matter what container they’re in (MKV, MP4, MOV, etc).

These are simply codec license restrictions.

h264 , damn, i didnt know that, it’s a pain tho i suppose that the windows version dont have these problems ?

You might like to review some options here:

If budget permits, it’s a compelling reason to invest in the Studio license. It’s a once off purchase that covers you for all major updates, indefinitely as far as I’ve been able to tell.

  • OSX enjoys full H.264 / H.265 and AAC support.
  • Free version under Windows has OS supported 8bit H.264 / H.265 decode and encode. Studio is needed for 10bit or 12bit+ support. AAC is supported.

Ok thank you for your time and advice ! see you
