Cups issue: printing not possible

FYI
bug report with solution

Since a few days I have an issue with printing. Apps in gnome which use the systems print dialog do not print anymore. The print dialog is hanging and I need to stop the apps to recover. That is true for apps like gimp, papers, eye of gnome, epiphany, etc. Not affected is libreoffice for example. There is no trace of any problem in the logs. cups is running fine.

Today I found the solution:

Packages cups and libcups 2.4.15-1 are the problem. On my system they were install 27. Nov. 2025

Downgrading cups and libcups to 2.4.14-1 is the solution.

I rebooted the computer after the downgrade and printing works again.

FYI

Issue has been reported to cups on github. Offending commit has been identified.

I assume we will see a new release shortly.

And the issue is indeed already resolved with latest cups package as far as i know, underlaying issue was a bit more complex, but i had the issue yesterday and while i was investigating it was already resolved with a new cups package.

So no need for any workaround from what i know. Simply update.

very early .. sad i was not reading this before. Would have protected me from the investigations, strange that I didn’t find the report. but was somehow obsessed with GTK printing.

Totally unrelated but intersting detail on Linux Printing:
