Configuring variety wallpaper changer on endeavouros i3 with feh

hello everyone, noob here.
does anyone use variety wallpaper changer? i liked it alot from the previous distros and DEs ive tried, but it seems to be giving me trouble using it for the first time in i3.

the images i have variety pool from are not all correct sizes most of them are just pictures taken from a phone in portrait mode. I’d like the portrait images to be displayed in full at the center of the screen with borders to fill the empty space. I was able to achieve this on other DEs by just toggling the setting for this behaviour in their respective wallpaper tools and variety would acknowledge these changes. everytime it generates a new photo

with i3 though, variety seems to atleast know that i’m using feh for my wallpaper tool, but even though ive ran feh --bg-max <path_to_image> to get it to do the same behavior, whenever variety changes the wallpaper it fills the entire screen zoomed in.

I see that variety creates a bash file in my home directory named “.fehbg” but in it, it is being defined that feh output the wallpaper with the --bg-fill arguement which zooms images in to fill the screen.

i’d like to find out what script is responsible for writing this .fehbg bash file so i can change its defaults, maybe? or is there another way i could go about this? any input would be greatly appreciated :slight_smile:

No experience with either - but you should check if the file is being recreated each time, or is used if present. Try overwriting with YOUR choice of settings, and see what happens. If not enough, try your settings and changing permissions on the file to see if it survives and is used…

This is the ‘direct action’ method of getting what you want - and may or may not help! :grin:

it is being recreated each time a new wallpaper is generated. ( i say “generated” because variety applies special filters to the images)

Have you tried making the unwriteable after YOU generate it? (in other words, does it internally error and continue on with what it finds?)

I dont actually generate it. I give variety a directory of images, and it just cycles through each of the files in there. what gets generated every 5 minutes or so, is an image with a filter.

i still tried what you suggested changng chmod permisions on the .fehbg file but it seems to not care about that and when i click on next image from the variety app the .fehbg file just gets updated anyway.

So much for the backdoor fixes, I guess. Sorry! :grin: May even be driven to make a bug report on variety - after trying whatever else is searchable or configurable…

of course, you could script a pass through **convert** (imagemagick) before the image gets in the queue...

Make sure you have nitrogen package installed and comment out this line in ~/.config/i3/config and replace it by the below one:

i dont know man did i do something wrong? nothing is changing. i am on zsh. perhaps i should put that line in the .zshrc file? coz i dont have a .zprofile one. i did create one to follow your instructions though. but nothing happened

im curious though why did you have me install nitrogen if we were gonna comment out its auto launch at start up line in the i3 config file? is it being used even? coz that .fehbg file is still being updated when i click on the Next buttton from the variety gui

Yes both feh and nitrogen will work. You can verify in ~.config/variety/scripts/set_wallpaper.

Working on my side. Put it back there and reboot. Share output of echo $XDG_CURRENT_SESSION.

Fixed a type in above post. Try now and logout and log back in:

removed feh, fixed the typo

i opened the nitrogen gui and there is an option at the bottom left that is toggled to zoom fill. changed it to automatic, then clicked Next image on variety. went back to nitrogen and it is back to zoom fill.

Is variety autostarting?? It should show a icon in the sys tray.
