Computer boots to black screen after updating

Hello! I just updated my system, after two years (oops) I finally got it to update, with some help from reddit. Anyway, it’s stuck on a black screen now, after restarting.

I know what the problem is, I can login, I just don’t know what to put in to get my screen back. I have tried several trouble shooting ideas I found on my own, the only one that sort of worked was startx. But I have no idea what all the text it spit out means.

I had it set up with default login window before this happened, nothing fancy.

And to get it to update, I went in nano, #'d communities, updated my keyring, and then ran a update through the welcome app. It seemed to go well, the only issue was a dependency that wouldn’t load, which was better than before.

Hopefully this is a easy fix, I’m not great at this Linux stuff. I wasn’t the one who put this on my computer, lol.

Please help, I’m not having fun over here.

Chroot into the system and downgrade mesa.

Be careful when asked if the package should be blacklisted for for future updates.

This worked for me but only with 25.0.5 not with 25.1.0. also keep in mind to downgrade mesa and lib32-mesa.

Is there anyway you could write out the steps for me?
The links don’t really seem to have a lot of clear commands, and I don’t know if I trust AI summary I keep getting when I look it up.

I downgraded mesa and lib32-mesa, and it still isn’t working. I got a crunched up picture for like a split second, once, but it hasn’t happened again.

Well this is the way I see it, if you haven’t done a update on the system for two years, you would be better of to do a fresh install. Do you know how to download a live ISO and how to create a USB stick for booting of the live ISO ?

I completely agree. Far too much has happened to Arch/EOS over a 2 year time period to expect a smooth update.

I did just that actually, switched to Debian.
