Coming soon: ZFS Assistant

This is something I have wanted for a long time now. It is one of the few applications I am making for myself, for my own use.

I have always wanted to make an application like this even though I know not many people use ZFS.

ZFS Assistant is a comprehensive ZFS management application for Linux and FreeBSD. It provides graphical and command-line interfaces with the same capabilities for managing pools, datasets and snapshots, monitoring pool health, and automating snapshots, retention and replication. It is intended to make managing ZFS easier while still providing access to the rich feature set that ZFS provides.

Here are some of the features:

  • A tray icon that monitors pool health and job statuses
  • Notifications of poor health
  • A CLI with the same functions as the GUI
  • Pool overviews and status
  • Create, import and destroy pools
  • View and set pool and dataset properties
  • Take checkpoints
  • View pool history
  • Create, mount, modify and destroy datasets
  • Grant and revoke dataset/pool permissions
  • Take and delete snapshots
  • Mark snapshots as held
  • Restore, clone and rollback snapshots
  • Restore files and directories from snapshots
  • Create policies for scheduled snapshot creation, pruning and retention
  • Add remote targets for snapshots
  • Send snapshots to remotes and optionally prune them

Needs a bit more polish and testing to prior to an initial release.

What an accomplishment. . . No doubt a lot of thorough though went into structuring such a program for use by everyone’s computers is indeed of serious consideration. Thank you for your dedication to the community at large and for your programming aspirations. When will your first release come. . . ?

Rich

Probably in a couple of weeks.
