Cinnamon screenshots & screen recorder shortcuts

Since my new plaything, a Thinkpad T14 Gen 1, has the Print key in such a prominent place (between AltGr and right Ctrl), I thought I should add some keyboard shortcuts to use it with Shutter, my preferred screenshot tool.

And guess what I discovered and totally missed all these years? Cinnamon has a plethora of useful screenshot shortcuts already built in! You can check these out by going to System Settings → Hardware → Keyboard → Shortcuts. Then, in Categories, select System → Screenshots and Recording, and you’ll find these:

  • Take a screenshot of an area (Shift+Print)
  • Copy a screenshot of an area to clipboard (Shift+Ctrl+Print)
  • Take a screenshot (Print)
  • Copy a screenshot to clipboard (Ctrl+Print)
  • Take a screenshot of a window (Alt+Print)
  • Copy a screenshot of a window to clipboard (Ctrl+Alt+Print)
  • Toggle recording desktop (must restart Cinnamon)[1] (Shift+Ctrl+Alt+R; displays a red “recording dot” in the tray, saves a .webm video to your Videos folder)

How cool is that! And I didn’t know about these for about 13 years… (because I’ve been using Shutter and SimpleScreenRecorder forever and a day.)

These really come in handy if you have to document things often.

  1. Restarting Cinnamon is only needed if you change the key combination! ↩︎

Excellent. . . nice information. . . good to now know.

Great tip! Just wanted to added the shortcut equivalent to the w11 “Copy a screenshot of an area to clipboard” for my muscle memory. (Shift + Super + S)
