Cinnamon laggy for no reason

Out of the blue Cinnamon started to lag everything I do (CPU % low): Moving windows, typing into a console or any other app - everything is done in slow motion.

I did not install or upgrade anything. The only thing I remember is that I plugged an external Samsung screen into the HDMI port.

Strange, because I did not change my system. But I went ahead and updated the system anyway. But nothing changed for the better. Then I tried the Budgie DE. Budgie was as snappy as Cinnamon used to be until yesterday. So, I guess it is not a video driver thing, there must be something, that has changed (for whatever reason), that Cinnamon doesn’t like.

Any ideas?

Have you tried to use a new user in cinnamon? This would help to figure out if it is actually cinnamon causing the issue.

You’re the one with access to the system to inquire and change things. Look in your memory (and your pacman.log), try rollbacks, etc.

Sorry, folks, you won’t believe it, but a cold-start did it. I used to just reboot my HP notebook for months now. Today I had to shut it down completely and guess what: Everything’s as snappy as it used to be days ago.

Hah, well we could have suggested giving it a swift kick, but reboots can cure lots of odd things :wink:
