Chromium - Passwords

I wasn’t sure which category to put this post under. But as I’m using Endeavouros, Plasma 6.6,3, I guess this will do.

The issue lies with Chromium browser. which I’ve used for years. The problem is that I’ve noticed that all my usernames and passwords are now being shown under Password Manager. In the past they were hidden with Plasma, or I had to login to Chromium if I wanted to view a any password under a different DE such as Xfce. But I should add that I recently imported these passwords from a csv file, but in the past when I closed Chromium then reopened it they became hidden.

Firefox has the ideal solution for this. All passwords and usernames are listed, but the password details are hidden, until I use a Master Password to login with, when I can view any passwords. But no such arrangement seems to exist with Chromium and Plasma.

If it is possible to hide such a list as automatically seemed to be the case until recently, I’d be grateful for suggestions.

You have kwallet installed? If not, install it first.

Try to force chromium to use kwallet with option “–password-store kwallet6”.

You know what they say: don’t put all eggs in one basket. That was the reason I’ve dropped Mozilla sync in favor of Proton Pass + KeePass (as local backup).

Do you use vanilla Chromium? I’d recommend trying Helium. It’s awesome. I keep Cromite as a backup browser on PC, but it’s my main browser on Android.

I have Kwallet Manager installed. Opening it and looking under contents, there is shown an entry Chromium Keys (1). And under that heading is listed Passwords, under which is Chromium Safe Storage. But none of this is hiding my password list, nor requiring me to enter a password to view any of them. Where’s the security??

Edit: I’ve figured it out now as I had not set a password for Kwallet. Done that and it now requires me to enter that password to use Chromium on a reboot or logout. But I’ve noticed that I’m not required to re-enter a password if I exit Chromium then reload it in same session. So not as secure as Firefox’s Master Password.

Yeah, I’ve heard about Helium, but on the whole I’ve been very satisfied with Chromium, especially as it runs fast compared to the increasingly sluggish Firefox. Thnx for the tip anyway.
