Found this short video worth watching:
" Google Chrome has begun disabling uBlock Origin, the best ad-blocker and privacy & security extension across all browsers. If you’re not already impacted, you’re about to be thanks to manifest v3. This video talks about why this is happening, what you can do, your options to still use an ad-blocker, and how to advocate for a solution".
FU** Google Chrome
To be honest…I’ve never used Google Chrome in my computing life. I let Internet Explorer searching, back in the days & forgot it there.
I used Chrome for a long time as it seemed to be quicker than FF. But switched completely to FF after Google blocks uBlock & co. Not regretting anything. FF has become a lot better.
Amazon is the next on my shortlist of companies trying to flood me with unwanted ads in Prime Video and Freevee.
Always used Firefox until recently when I switched to Librewolf. The only Chromium based browser that appeals to me is Vanadium.
[lain@wired ~]$ grep IgnorePkg /etc/pacman.conf
# Pacman won't upgrade packages listed in IgnorePkg and members of IgnoreGroup
IgnorePkg = google-chrome
I’m using Firefox for 99.99% stuff. Rare moments when I need Chrome, I have it at v126 (supports ad blocker) and not updating it any further for now.
For obvious reasons, this isn’t recommended
I used to be one of those that used Firefox most of the time and Chrome as a fallback. Between the shenanigans of Mozilla and Chrome/Chromium, I now use LibreWolf most of the time and Vivaldi as a fallback.
Chris is still using uBlock on google-chrome. I’m still using uBlock on google-chrome. Perhaps it is all a non-issue.
While he claims everyone “overhyped” the situation he is severely downplaying it.
That guy flip flops and changes his opinion on things almost on a weekly basis from what I have seen over the years. And this video proves once more that he has mostly no idea what he is talking about.
And with how he acts and talks in this video I am pretty sure it was just made as click / outrage bait.
uBlock Origin was never just an adblocker but a wide range content blocker that can also be used to block ads.
With uBlock Origin Lite all you are getting now is the ad blocking part in a severly neutered form compared to the manifest v2 version.
And originally Google was planning to neuter the blocking functionalities even more. It was only because of a lot of backlash that they eased things up a bit (e.g. the on the number of allowed filtering rules).
Yes, you can still get decent adblocking with uBlock Origin Lite FOR NOW. But to block more complex ads (e.g. Youtube, Twitch, …) you have to change the default configuration and grant the addon more permissions, already rendering some of the advertised security benefits moot.Yes you can do this on a per site basis and don’t have to do it globally, but once the complex ads spread to more sites you will have to do it anyway.
Google is just playing the long game here and you can rest assured that they will try again to screw people over in a future manifest v4.
As a rule of thump, when it comes to subjects my knowledge is limmited to almost nothing, I go through the comments underneath the videos. There will always be guys who know a lot more about a subject than the youtubers themselves. It takes some time to read them all, but it’s worth spending time.
