after updating this weekend and then turning computer back on and entering into grub my pc fails to boot with this message

Test if you can boot the fallback image. If so, you may need to rebuild the initramfs.
A similar thing happened to someone else a couple days ago in this thread: ERROR: device not found, drops to emergency shell

Too bad. It may be worth rebuilding the initramfs anyway, although you will have to boot to the live environment and do it from a chroot. https://discovery.endeavouros.com/system-rescue/arch-chroot/2022/12/
Try reinstalling the kernel and headers, which will rebuild your initramfs as well. Make sure the EFI partition is mounted if you have one.
I would try to arch-chroot from livesystem and rebuild the bootimage (advice of dalto)
dracut-rebuild or mkinitcpio -P
mkinitcpio -P did not work yes I mounted efi partition neither did reinstall kernel and headers
I was able to reset it to a snapper backup but then after I updated it broke in the same way again. I don’t know what is breaking it.
Did the dracut command work? If yes, then you are using dracut, not mkinitcpio. It’s normal that just one of the two is working.
Is the kernel (linux or linux-lts) or grub among the updated packages that break your bootability?
Some hardinfo might also be useful to have a look at. You can use your Live USB to post the following:

From your updates I just saw that you have mkinitcpio installed, but you mentioned that the mkinitcpio command did not run. Was there an error message after you tried it?
Can you please check whether just mkinitcpio is installed or if you have both, dracut and mkinitcpio, installed?
it ran but it did not work meaning it did not fix the unknown problem. dracut is not installed.
Could you check if your post update pacman hooks for the mkinitcpio update are run properly?
If with the pacman hooks everything is fine, you could check/post here the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
I’m currently not on my Arch laptop, otherwise I would check and post what pacman hooks are on my machine…

I saw in the updates, that lvm2 is among them. Is your root-partition part of a lvm2-RAID? If so, I think there is a mkinitcpio hook “lvm2” that should be added to the mkinitcpio.conf. At least if I remember correctly from a couple years back…
no raid on my system. my os is entirely separate from all the others drives on its own usb stick. it’s simply the default btrfs configuration from the endeavouros installer
Okay. Since you already excluded the kernel, headers and grub and still got the error…
It might be connected to the build of the initramfs, so to mkinitcpio. My first thought was that there is a hook or module in the mkinitcpio.conf missing.
But I am lacking some in-depth knowledge to give a certain recommendation.
Of course there is a good Arch wiki page on common mkinitcpio hooks, modules, etc.
You could also install dracut and use that to build your initramfs in order to see if the problem is persistent then.
Since you are still on mkinitcpio (which is still the Arch default), I assume you are running EOS on this machine with btrfs since a while without this kind of problems?
Yes for about a year now, updating every week or so. I actually have two flashdrives running eos and they both broke with the same update.
Okay, could you give us a feedback, in case you try some changes with building the initramfs?
Some others seem to have the same issue. I guess you have reasons to use a flash drive. It’s probably not the best solution for everyday use.
If it would be my system, after reading the Manjaro forum thread, I would just try it with dracut instead of mkinitcpio
your help has been much appreciated. for now I’m going to simply not update mkinitcpio until they fix it for flash drives. if it doesn’t get fixed, then I’ll switch to dracut.
