For the past several days, my system has been unstable. I’ve been experiencing issues with shutting down the system and launching certain applications, particularly Steam games. Additionally, there have been noticeable spikes in RAM usage.
Approximately five days ago, my GRUB bootloader became corrupted, and about three days ago, I encountered issues with the VFAT filesystem. Today, the system failed more severely.
After significant troubleshooting, I was able to boot the system by disabling (commenting out) the first entry in the /etc/fstab file. However, the system now freezes after I enter my password during login.
I also observed that the shutdown, restart, and sleep options are disabled or unavailable on the lock/login screen.
During boot, the GRUB menu shows three EndeavourOS entries: one for the latest kernel and two for older versions (one of which appears to be a fallback/initramfs option).
Using a USB Live ISO to boot, back up all of your important data to an external drive. Once done, disconnect that external drive and then resume troubleshooting.
Given the extent, and general vagueness of the issues, my feeling is it’d be worth considering a full reformat.
Before doing that, with your data backed up now, you might first take the opportunity to:
check if your BIOS has an update available (fwupdmgr).
