Browser dilemma

To have an alternative, some websites works better with chromium

I use Brave. The shields from it work quite well (not perfect, but well) and uBlock is no longer supported in general due to manifest V3, though it still works good on Firefox, as far as I know. You could try out the new FF fork ā€œZen browserā€ though that one is still in alpha.

And since you said chromium-based, Iā€™d recommend Brave. The crypto stuff I donā€™t like either but you can disable that and call it a day. The rest work just fine. Maybe Chromium/Thorium could be another option.

I donā€™t use FF because its lack of development and inconveniences that donā€™t mean anything in the end. They get the money from Google and other stuff so at that point Iā€™d just prefer to use something much more convenient. I feel Brave is a good compromise between performance/convenience and privacy/security. Is not Chrome or Edge, and is not something unusable. Also ā€œrecentlyā€ they updated their UI, which for me made it literally usable. Before this the tabs and such were too small and you couldnā€™t adjust them, after the change, some people donā€™t like it but I personally love the ā€œnewā€ look.

In the end, is up to you to decide what to use.

Edit: I forgot to mention the ā€œlocal/privateā€ sync chain between devices that Brave does is pretty cool, unlike the rest that you need an online account and connect to a server.

youtube and chrome are both owned by google. It is being discussed at least since 2018 that google might intentionally slow down none-chrome browser.

I havenā€™t found a chromium browser that I actually like to use for a daily driver so for myself personally I use Librewolf for 99% of things, and on the odd occasion a site that I have to use doesnā€™t play nicely either due to not using chromium or my overly-cautious privacy settings I tend to just pull a random chromium-based browser down with yay, do whatever I have to do in that and then nuke it again with a nice yay -R

Almost certainly a little bit overkill but it makes me feel a bit better in the face of being forced to conform for a few minutes

Often because of performance, or even basic requirements.

My sonā€™s school set him homework with an online graphical coding websiteā€¦ and it only worked with Chromium browsers. After a couple of attempts with Vivaldi and Chrome, we just set up a web-app to open it with Chrome.

There are many issues, thankfully for most of us we wonā€™t encounter them more than once in a blue moonā€¦

However, due to the ability of Chromium browsers to set up a shortcut accessible from your menu.

A little thought I missed posting - call it an alternate view of the significance of Googleā€™s support of Mozilla fundingā€¦

There is no other sizeable user base for alternate browsers, and many of even those are based on Chrom(e|ium). If Firefox were to stop development, then Google would be faced with monopoly position pressure (well deserved, incidentally) and would be left with little in the way of defence. Keeping Firefox going leaves them with an ā€˜outā€™, and their market share is not sufficient to cause them much of a problem. I doubt that much if any ā€˜influenceā€™ is brought to bear on Mozilla, as its having differences in focus and intent is a plus in the situation as it exists.

Of course, this could be just an unjustified opinion, but to me it makes at least as much sense as the ā€˜watch the bad influenceā€™ opinions - and probably moreā€¦

I actually want to ask the individuals here that consider Mozilla bad why are they bad? What about Brave Software Inc., who seems to be a for profit business, not a non-profit organization?

I wouldnā€™t call Mozilla Firefox bad. The organization has some problems and focus issues, and isnā€™t really moving the browser as fast as they could. They could also benefit from setting Firefox off on a path like Thunderbird and being supported by donations.

Iā€™m ok with Brave being a for-profit. I use both for certain sites and isolation. Iā€™m not sure what the taxation model of the owner has to do with it. Iā€™d rather see open sourced code.

Personally i feel there are way too many browsers and i donā€™t really feel comfortable with some of them. Iā€™ll stick with Firefox and Chromium. These are my two that i have installed and Iā€™m not really interested in all the others. I use Firefox but Chromium is my backup. I donā€™t find i have any issues on any sites that i would go to normally. :man_shrugging:
