I use mostly Firefox, but i want to install and use a chromium based browser. Which one do you recommend and why? I am between Brave and Chromium (with U-block).
I also only use Firefox Browser with ublock and arkenfox user.js.
If I use a Chromium-based browser then Brave with the appropriate settings.
What else I can recommend is Ungoogled-Chromium from AUR
In the end, it’s up to you to decide which browser you want to use.
I agree, but i read some not so good things for brave. Thats why i am asking
Brave is very easy to use with the right settings. There is also a lot written about Firefox. In the end, you move around the Internet with it and are basically tracked.
If you want to use Brave with ublock, you should completely disable Brave’s internal security settings.
If unsure about a browser either don’t use it (you had a feeling about it for a reason) or run in virtual machine and test it out. If you don’t trust your browser no point in using it.
Which is the right settings? Internal security settings?
You have a point
The browser and my entire system is in German. It is difficult for me to enter the exact settings.
There is a page in German, maybe you can translate it. It describes in detail how to set up brave in a data-friendly way
I just use chromium.
Can you tell me why?
Because it’s the open source browser project where others have come from. It’s simple. It’s source code is the basis for many other popular browsers. It has the language feature to interpret a page. It has extensions. (ublock origin) It works well for me. I only use Firefox and Chromium is my backup. It has lots of features built in. It’s been around forever.
Is there any appropriate settings to use ?
Still chromium is not free from Google influences but better then Chrome.
I use Firefox out of principle and its open source.
If i really have to i use Chromium
I don’t have anything special set that I can think of. But there are quite a few things you can look at in settings under performance and system.
Nothing is free of Google when using anything Google related.
Edit: As much as i dislike Googles practices the search engine is what i use so kind of stuck with them.
So I also have been using Firefox/Thunderbird for years. But like you I ended up having to install a Chrome based browser for the odd site which would break. Lets be honest in saying that we have to do this because companies only want to test their web applications on Google Chrome (that is what I see from the QA side).
That being said (controversial opinion), I have very little faith in any Chrome based browser when it comes to privacy. So if your use case is like mine to use a Chrome based browser the odd time for a broken site … then I suggest:
- Brave
- Vivaldi
My reasoning is these two are likely to get regular security patches. Security in my book will always trump privacy. Browsers are highly used day to day. And if you look at Chrome … it receives 2 to 3 updates a month.
AUR stuff, you are at the mercy of who ever is maintaining it. So I try to go with official repository ARCH packages.
Hope this helps.
Anythings better than Edge!
I use duckduckgo but i’ll have to admit that the results are not always what i want.
So i sometimes temporary switch to Google search
tl;dr, but I use Chromium now for a couple of months and never go back to Firefox. But uBlock origin is now never good supportet (Mv3). uBlock light doesn’t do a particularly good job, so I switched to Adguard Mv3 Beta for the ad blocker and so far it’s been working quite well.
I would go with Brave or Vivaldi. Brave requires some settings to do done in order to disable of the questionable things they have in. Vivaldi is great for those that do more or less everything in their browser. It does have an adblocker pre-installed and, in general, seems to be pretty competently made. Standard old Chromium also works fine, but the fact ManifestV2 will go down next year, it does make me not fully accepting of it.
