Books, what are you reading right now?

I finished The Last Wish 2-3 days ago.
Unfortunately there are not audiobooks or even ebooks in Greek, so… physical it is.
There are so many strange names, monsters etc. so the English versions are not the best way with these books for me.
I need The Lady of the Lake and I think I’m ok for now.

The English versions seem to be a double edged sword () anyway.
While many people seem to agree that the audio books have great narration, most say that the translation isn’t very good.

PS: New (audio)book (Rozdroże kruków / Crossroad of Ravens) will be released in 2 weeks in German

Robert M. Pirsig – Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: 40th Anniversary Edition (I know there is a 50th ann. ed.)

A re-read. First read it 1980 upon recommendation from my then-girlfriend, “The Countess”. Love.

Watch the Apple+ TV Show. It differs considerably from the show but it is visually stunning and told beautifully.

Just finished the novella The Tusks of Extinction by Ray Nayler.
For the first time, I went into a book completely blind, and I’m glad I did.

You do have some interesting reading, I admit stealing suggestions… Put this one on my “to-buy” list!

Unrelated: Whenever reading your nickname, I wonder if you actually ever get fog in Greece? I always thought we British had exclusive rights on fog and bad weather…

I had read The mountain in the sea from the same author and I liked it.
The Tusks of Extinction was finalist for the 2025’s Hugo Award for Best Novella, so it was an easy pick.

Unrelated: I’ve seen fog very few times in my -early- life but they were so beautiful.
In recent years I have been trying not to forget even the rain. :frowning:

Edit: It is the winner for best novella.

I went to work this morning and everyone looked at me strangely. What’s going on? You have the day off  Okay, someone should have told me.

So I was in town and passed by the local bookstore. After a nice chat with the bookseller I’m now back home with a nice new book cost me 12€

I started Foundation twice, but always stopped rather early. I don’t know exactly why but I just can’t get into it.

The sci fi concepts in “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy are mind-blowing :milky_way:

The Redemption of time is in my TBR, but I’m not sure if I want to read it yet

Absolutely! I read a lot of SF and those books are some of the best.

@Svartis : If you enjoyed “Three Body Problem” I’m sure you will love the other two books also! “The Dark Forest” is probably my favorite, but they’re all very, very good!
Not sure about “Redemption of Time” though. Didn’t hear much good about it tbh and never read it.

I must really stop bargain-hunting real soon now… and get better organized… Keep forgetting books I bought…

I still have the latest 22-book Humble Bundle to read, but I guess I’ll read Exodus before…

“Electronic heaps” somehow build up much faster than heaps of dead-tree-editions… :joy:

Is this the abridged version or the unabridged version?

Can you please provide a synopsis and your review?

Very entertaining read so far. Feel like I’m just being chatted to.

Spoiler:

A science fiction thriller set in a near-future world where elephants have been driven to extinction primarily due to the illegal ivory trade.
In response, scientists in Moscow have successfully resurrected the woolly mammoth, but the creatures lack the necessary survival instincts to thrive in the wild. To address this, the digitized consciousness of Dr. Damira Khismatullina, a renowned expert in elephant behavior who was murdered while protecting the last elephants, is uploaded into a mammoth, making her the new matriarch of the herd.
The story follows her struggle to guide the mammoths and protect them from both illegal poachers and legal trophy hunters, while also confronting her own traumatic past and the complex motivations behind the mammoth revival project.

I avoid reviews and suggestions because I treat reading like eating. Preferences change over the years or even from moment to moment, even for me.
Sometimes I want fast food, other times I want home cooked mousaka, and other times I want to try the latest food trends.
Sometimes I crave ice cream and not lentils.
Now I love mushrooms, but when I was 16 I hated them.
Sometimes I don’t finish the same food, while other times I devour it.

Food, books, movies, music, Linux distributions, Linux environments… I treat them all the same.

After all that… I really liked the book. It didn’t have the vast galactic distances and epic situations that I usually prefer, but despite that, it touched me and I finished it in one sitting.

PS. If the title of the thread was “recommend books,” I probably wouldn’t have written anything. Reading doesn’t always mean I like it.
