I wanted to use 2k resolution on my msi external monitor but the laptop display can only support up to 1920x1080 60Hz which is my current resolution and refresh rate for external monitor. When I tried to switch external monitor to 2560x1440 both screens goes black so I switch it back to the same resolution which it came back to normal. I connect the monitor via adapter using HDMI which connect to the laptop via thunderbolt port

Here is the output of xrandr:

Welcome to the community @str :waving_hand::smiley: :enos_flag:

For testing purposes, if you reduce your refresh rate to 30Hz for the external display, does it yield the same result?

the screen goes black for a few seconds then came back

Just curious, is there a normal HDMI port on the laptop you can try?

yes, but the screen also goes black when i plug in and it will block my mouse movement

That’s good to know, it wouldn’t appear to be the plug / adaptor at least.

Do you have another HDMI cable you can try, or can you confirm that the existing cable+monitor works at that resolution using another computer (any OS)?

Edit: Can you also confirm please, whether you’re extending your display to the external monitor, or you’re mirroring it?

I tried connecting surfacebook running windows 11 using the same adapter and the monitor goes black, so what I did is meta + p and choose use external display only. Due to circumstances I’m unable to test it anymore for today, i will try other cable tomorrow and tell you the result. Thank you so much for today I hope you can help me tommorrow if you can

Okay I know the problem now my hub only support up to 4K 60Hz with direct port support up to 4K 60Hz, but i can configure up to 144Hz at 2K resolution and the old cable I was using is almost a decade old so the spec isn’t so good plugging in direct port fixed it again, thank you very much

Glad to hear you found the issue!
