Black screen and forced log off to GDM when resuming from sleep

After updating to Gnome 49 I am facing this issue intermitently. When My laptop’s been asleep for a while and I wake it, after I log in I am met by a brief black screen and promptly after that I am forcefully logged off. I proceed to log in again and there’s another black screen for a second, but this time I am not logged off.

Can I get any help with this?

It’s hard to say without seeing logs, but from what you’re describing (black screen, forcefully logged off, repeat) sounds as though the service is crashing.

Are you able to share some logs from the last time this happened? Here is a link that might prove helpful: https://thelinuxcode.com/find_gnome_logs/

Maybe that will shed light on what’s happening. Additionally, if you rolled back from Gnome 49 to the previous version does the issue persist?

I am posting the logs since lid open, maybe it’s helpful. Personally I couldn’t find anything that can explain the black screen.

I did try turning off all user extensions, closing the lid for a few seconds, then opening it again, but to no avail…

Thanks for sharing that!

I skimmed the logs you shared and there is definitely an issue with Gnome. Does the issue persist with the LTS kernel?

I’m trying my best to understand the stack trace, and it looks like its potentially having issues with the extension “AppIndicator” and having issues. Are you able to try disabling and re-enabling it? It seems to be having issues loading '/tmp/systray_Rmoucd'

It may be possible to clear the cache located in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/appindicatorsupport@rgcjonas.gmail.com/

Hey @radumitrescu were you able to get this resolved?

No.

I couldn’t find any cache files located where you pointed to. Instead I tried disabling the extension altogether and trying that way, to no avail.

It’s a reported bug.

So from what I can understand, this has to do with systemd

Looks like it but no reason to look at systemd like that. All software is updated all the time and if another piece of software is using a specific functionality something will break. So in this case gnome-settings will probably have to update something to make it work again.

Recently when systemd had a major update it broke apparmor.d-git.

Thanks for the clarification. I suppose I’ll just wait for an update.
