Best Way to Install KDE and i3 Side-by-side?

What’s the best way to install Endevour-OS with both KDE Plasma and I3? I want to try using both…but I know for a fact they have some conflicting packages such as lightdm and sddm, and some other packages.

If no easy way, guess if someone had the core-required packages to get the config files working from EndevourOS i3wm install that would be great.

I run both zero issues, just out and about should be back home in about an hour top and will post the relevant info then if no one else does

You can install them both at the same time from the live ISO. Then when you log in you can select Kde Plasma or I3.

I wasn’t able to choose more than 1 desktop environment in the LiveCD installer.

That’s because there are unfortunate side-effects in some combinations. Plasma and i3/hyperland/sway are generally safe.

As far as my testing goes, installing any number of X11 window managers alongside ONE full desktop environment is safe and doesn’t cause issues. The thing that causes issues is Settings Managers. Most, if not all, window managers don’t have a real Settings Manager, as such they don’t conflict with full desktop environments.

Now, whether you should install multiple window managers is debatable.
I have 5 (Openbox, i3, Bspwm, dk, hyprland [WC]) and Cinnamon. All good over here. :eyes:

Just install one thing first, then install whatever is needed after.

sudo pacman -S plasma-desktop

OR

sudo pacman -S i3

Do you have a method of easily installing pre-configured endevourOS config for those window-managers?

Yeah ideally I’d like the preconfiged EndevourOS version of I3, or bspwm etc.

EndeavourOS doesn’t provide customised configs for everything. I think they only provide custom setups for KDE and i3. The rest are in a repo that I am not sure is maintained.

You’re welcome mate

Yes i forgot that changed on the latest ISO. Sorry about that. So you would install Kde and then install i3 afterwords.

Tutorial is near the bottom of the page on this link for i3

Edit: I know you may have already installed.
