AUR installation errors--gpg key import Question

Want to try daily use Mullvad browser in my rotation I hear great things about it. I don’t want to install the Flatpak if I don’t have.
When I install, from AUR, the package yay -S mullvad-browser-bin it ends with:

:: PGP keys need importing:
 -> EF6E286DDA85EA2A4BA7DE684E2C6E8793298290, required by: mullvad-browser-bin
:: Import? [Y/n] y
:: Importing keys with gpg...
gpg: keyserver receive failed: No data
 -> problem importing keys

When I install, from AUR, the package yay -S mullvad-browser-latest-bin it ends with:

gpg: error reading key: No public key

 :: PGP keys need importing:
 -> EF6E286DDA85EA2A4BA7DE684E2C6E8793298290, required by: mullvad-browser-latest-bin
:: Import? [Y/n] y
:: Importing keys with gpg...
gpg: keyserver receive failed: No data
 -> problem importing keys

So here is my question: is this problem on my end? Or the maintainers? What can I do about it?
Thanks

There are instructions at the AUR page for how to import the key before you build the package which of course is from the Mullvad itself:

Also, why would you install the binary from AUR and not to download the browser directly from Mullvad itself?

You could verify your download, extract the tarball into a directory and run the binary from there.

You will get notified when there is an update and you can update it from within the browser itself.

thanks for the manual, did not know such a creature existed.

that would never occur to me. that’s something I did in WIN days…never in Linux. I always go for the curated route with apps (local repo, flatpak, aur, etc).
Another reason is I’d rather have the maintainer update not add something that I have to remember to manually do.

you are blowing my mind here :slight_smile: and that’s good

If you have a look at “sources” in the AUR page, it will download the tarball from Mullvad itself.

I am not saying that you have to do it in the way I described above but I think in this particular case both methods are somewhat equivalent.

I understand that everyone has their own predilection when it comes to how to maintain their system. So naturally you do you. I just wanted to point out the alternative which I have been using flawlessly since almost when Mullvad Browser was first released.

My way of thinking is, if I can leave out the middle-“man” I will most probably leave “object pronoun” out :wink:

I understand this completely and am open to the process (direct from mullvad) the more I think about. I can run an install script. I hope the GPG stuff works itself out.
That said, I worry more about Linux in general leaning on Flatpak more and more and my concern is no one ever talks about flatpak audits or cves and it seems like a very closed world, and a world we all take too much on faith…AUR on the other hand, I can inspect myself.
Thanks for the sound advice. Will report back.
