Liberation Day
Now I can just wait to see my town go into bankruptcy.
must be a chromium thing?
EOL for manifest V2 extensions
So, going back to Firefox, Brave, or…, wait for a google version of “blocker” ?
We knew this day was coming. Doesn’t bother me because I use Firefox/Librewolf as my primaries with Vivaldi as a secondary. Vivaldi’s integrated Ad Blocker seems to work quite well for those wanting a Chromium based browser.
It still works in Firefox.
Exactly. Mozilla isn’t part of the Manifest V2 phase out. One of the few things Mozilla is doing right.
Hopefully Mozilla keeps doing so. We’ll see.
For Chromium browsers, the new compatible extension is now uBlock Origin Lite
Go through the Options and enable everything, should be good to go
Still working here on Vivaldi.
Wait, what? There are other browsers besides Firefox?
How come it is working for vivaldi and other Chromium based browsers but not for Chrome? I assumed that the Manifest V2 phase out would involve Chromium too.
Also any reason why ublock origin cannot deliver the same functionality under Manifest V3?
“Also any reason why ublock origin cannot deliver the same functionality under Manifest V3?”
Yes.
Advertisers are complaining that their ads and tracking are being blocked and google relies on them for it’s money. SO, block uBlock. Possibly there is a technical reason involving the design of Man.V3? I would not know that as I am not an engineer/developer..but I guess it is possible. This is about money plain and simple. It always is. However, uBlock works in all Firefox based browsers that I am aware of.
I use firewall based blockers (of all types) and browser blocking on top of that.
I do not see 99% of the ads on YouTube and watch those “free” ad-supported movies ad-free also.
There is a plugin that blocks/skips/stops (I am unsure how it works, only that it does work) them in Firefox.
I use Firefox, Librewolf (mostly this) and Vivaldi and I completely agree that Vivaldi is a suitable chrome replacement. I DO have it install. I use it rarely but once in a awhile…
They will face the same problem soon, except Brave. Here are words from Vivaldi,
“Support for ManifestV2 ends June 2025.”
After going through the uBlock origin website it seems that the Filter Lists in ublock origin would also have to be updated using chrome webstore. That is not acceptable by ublock origin as the fear is one day Google might block some updates because it impinges their ads or affiliated ads. That is a valid concern of uBlock origin.
On the other hand Google’s business model is from ads.So they cannot be faulted over here too. I can understand where they are coming from. I do not agree with them on this but still.
What is obnoxious is the tracking, the conversion of an individual into a product, and invasive intrusion, like listening to everything.
@chroot if Support for ManifestV2 ends June 2025 then it will impact uBlock origin on Vivaldi too. Just like it has impacted uBlock origin on Chrome. Tomorrow if Vivaldi pivots away from their current model to a model where Ads are a factor then this will change there too.
I certainly hope Mozilla does not phase out Manifest V2.
@MyNameIsNobody yeah google revenue model is based on ads. So cannot begrudge them on not supporting this.
I would like to know if there is a technical reason too. Is there something in ManifestModelV3 that actually prevents uBlock origin in being effective? Does anyone have a clue on this?
Yes.
Though I cant find what I want to reference .. I think it was about permissions? .. this may get you started
As already indicated above uBOL (uBlock:Origin Lite) is v3 compliant and can be used with blink engine browsers (chrom*) .. but it lacks some features that may be necessayr for some people .. like the dropper.
Last I checked it was able to stand up to casual consumer browsing .. like blocking youtube ads .. but a higher filtering mode like Optimal or Complete needed to be set.
