Are You Yes or No, on AI.. DuckDuck Poll

IMO, AI is not a harmless tool.
What I see right now is no regulation, no rules, no responsibility, but a global, chaotic race for corporate bottom lines and military domination.

One writer’s views on what’s coming. The BCI stuff is science fiction coming to life!

I’m a developer. Its been on of my favourite things to do for so many years, when the AI bubble was forming (2021 ish) i was getting worried i was getting stripped away from the things i love most, programming.

Don’t get me wrong here, AI is a great tool to use for developers. But don’t use it in the way that it will fill out the code for you. Doing this, especially with a bigger codebase can generate massive security concerns. I tested this myself, and the code it generates is quite bad.. I used Claude for this (Claude Code).

Ever since i saw some videos about the downfall of stack overflow, I’ve cancelled my claude subscription and have started to use stackoverflow like i used to (pre-AI era).

(This post is getting long, but i swear - i am almost done!)

My cousin calls himself a developer too. I do not. He is a vibecoder. I proved this by hacking him. God do i hate using that word, but it is what it is. I found several vulnerabilities on his websites, i gained access to his admin dashboard. He uses cursor, all i really had to do was go digging through his javascript code. Which, for those who don’t know is completely open for the browser.

Anyway, this happened earlier this month and I’ve been using AI less and less. Bad security is a big let down for me. Human written code is far better than whatever the vibecoders use now.

From the Site below…

“Is AI Considered A Primary Threat To National And Cybersecurity Today?
Yes, AI is currently viewed as an “Arms Race.” It has democratized cybercrime by lowering the barrier to entry for sophisticated attacks, allowing low-skill actors to generate hyper-personalized phishing and malware at an unprecedented scale and speed.“

…and yet most believe it does. :frowning:

I agree with your last sentence: it excels now with modeling and numbers and it always will. Numbers are constant, rigid. It will never sound like a human being talks or thinks. It can gather all it wants but I can’t see it emulating/writing/speaking in the natural sound of a human, ever. Things that you say to me and I say to you have subtexts only we will understand, AI is sad and fake and I can’t see AI’s linguistic evolution ever coming to fruition. *Everything outside of linguistic, yes.

Disclaimer: I see a lot of fake writing daily, hence my take on it

Yeah, but these “threats” do always exist, what’s the point? The Internet is a security crisis. Computers are a security crisis. Radio communication is security crisis. Gunpowder is a security crisis. Metallurgy and bronze weapons are a security crisis. Horse back riding is a security crisis.

Is knife crime a problem, sure. Am I giving up my nice kitchen knife and cut things with flint-stones in the future? No. Humanity will figure out these threat scenarios - again - and move on. The new technology genie is out of the bottle.

These “threats” haven’t always existed. This is something relatively new, unknown, unregulated, and potentially critically dangerous.
The military exploitation of AI is a race with little or no guardrails.
Some of the people who helped create it are now warning of dangers, including possible human extinction.

“Humanity” is on the brink of extinction every second of every day because of the vast number of “defective” humans throughout the planet.
That threat does not recede, it only grows with every passing day.

More “AI people” warnings…

Hahaha. What? We all are “defective,” in one way or another  Granted, AI may contribute to that recognition sooner than later.

True dat!

I was referring more to the ones in positions of money and or power who affect/control/infect the rest of us.
And the ones who whose criminal/violent acts on others prevent mankind from ever being considered as “civilized“.

final poll ended 1/26

the 175,000 people have spoken.

I’m certain DDG will hear this mandate and get out of the AI game

In a link to this NothingBurger poll is DDG’s founder’s opine: “Many people want to opt out of AI features right now, but most tech companies are ignoring them. At DuckDuckGo our approach to AI is to only make AI features that are useful, private, and optional.”**

My Two Takes:

1)DDG is keeping AI forever despite the poll [see quote ^ above]

2)Aren’t all search engine algorithms the last few years…wait for it…drum roll please….a version of AI-Driven results anyways? Doesn’t that negate founder’s “optional”?
