Is anyone else having trouble joining the official Arch Linux Matrix server? I’ve been trying to connect for about a week now, but I keep getting a “failed to join” message. I can access other servers and spaces such as the EOS one without any issues.
Are you using a self-hosted matrix home server? The Matrix protocol is still immature, and small-time servers cannot handle loading even medium-sized public rooms. There’s even a server option to refuse users access to rooms above a certain “complexity,” which I take advantage of on my own server.
There was an incident last week where someone joined the main Arch Linux room and started spamming some horrendous (and very illegal) media content.
I immediately left the main room and purged my synapse server’s media store.
The room and its concomitant Matrix Space has been invite only ever since. I’m assuming law enforcement is involved, as there isn’t discussion of it anywhere (sans this post, which I found via search engine).
I was already in the space before it went invite only and recently made a new account on a different server. I was trying to get away from the main server matrix.org which I have been using all this time. I had to invite myself to get back in.
All of that is to say. Thanks for asking this question because now I know why.
