Anyone else having problems with firefox pausing?

It happens on things like forums or whatever long pages that I have to scroll down. It only happens occasionally and for less than 10 seconds, then it jumps to wherever it should have been if the scrolling was working. I can also unfreeze it by clicking open something else like the OS menu

Disabling hardware acceleration, fresh install, etc doesn’t solve the issue

It only happens on Firefox and derivatives, Vivaldi has never done it after many hours of use

The problem started sometime in the last few weeks and is the same for wayland or x11 across multiple distros

Not with Firefox and not with Librewolf. Could it be an extension misbehaving?

I didn’t experience such problems. It’s likely an extension misbehaving.

I only have one extension and it’s the exact same one I have on Vivaldi with the same filters (Ublock origin)

I think I’ll use Vivaldi more to make sure it doesn’t happen there, so I can rule out a hardware problem with the touchpad or hard drive

If it’s not an extension, Wayland, X11, or hardware acceleration, happens even with derivatives, happens on multiple systems, and reinstalling doesn’t matter, then the last thing I can think of is your Firefox settings folder. Usually .mozilla, but could also be .librewolf, .firedragon, etc.

Do you sync the accounts or manually copy/sync the settings files?

For me in Chrome, it was the hardware acceleration. I haven’t noticed anything since I turned them off.

Does it happen also if you create and try a new profile in Firefox?

No issues here in EOS with Firefox.

Good question. I would try creating a new profile, too, @Archnoob .

Older version of firefox on Floorp doesn’t freeze

Every other variant that uses the newest version freezes

Somewhere around version 134 is started happening across all variants and distros for me, but Floorp is 128 and has no problem so far after a couple hours of use

I’m having the same problem. It seems to only happen when I’m scrolling in Firefox. Like you, the only extension I’m using is uBlock Origin and it doesn’t seem to matter if I have one or many tabs open.

It’s just on the newest versions of Firefox. I have ublock origin with the same filter lists running on Vivaldi and an old version of Firefox with Floorp, and they both work fine

No such issues on Firefox or LibreWolf for me with EndeavourOS or Debian SID.

It just occurred to me that I used to get jerky scrolling in Firefox and I fixed it by turning off kinetic scrolling

  • Go to about:config
  • Set apz.gtk.kinetic_scroll.enabled to false
  • Create the key apz.gtk.kinetic_scroll.enabled if it’s not there
