Heh, I prefer calling it optimized for HTPC use, just like what SteamOS does Bazzite images is basically Atomic Fedora loaded with a bunch of gaming optimization. The PC version functions like a typical KDE desktop, the Deck versions let you operate the Deck, other handheld consoles, or a PC the way you would operate the Steam Deck.
For the most part I think it’s personal preference. Some people have the update notification indicator on their task bar; for them it could be that they just like clearing notifications. Some people live in the terminal and the update command becomes something they instinctively do every 45 minutes. Some people simply update whenever they feel like it, usually after checking the news, but one day they fail to check the news before yaying and their entire system crashes due to packages and/or database failure… then they learn their lesson and stick to updating weekly. (I am totally not talking about myself, nuh uh! )
I’d say updating every one or two weeks is enough. Sometimes critical security patches arrive though, and you’re encouraged to update ASAP. Personally I’ve settled on letting my system build and update twice a week on Mon and Thu.
Regarding this point. I am one of those who has a specific day once a week to do updates, in my case it’s every Saturday. And there are some here who do it every two weeks. So far since June I haven’t had any issues with updates by doing them once a week.
I’ve personally never seen the purpose of daily updating (But I know a lot of people do which is fine), a lot of the changes are minimal in terms of me using the system, I almost don’t notice anything even doing updates weekly unless it’s a main update for something like KDE Plasma or Pacman or new features you can use (Or updates for software I install such as web browser etc). I do keep track and look at what is being updated though so I know what is changing.
I tend to find a lot of the issues regarding updates I have read around forums usually appear during the week and get fixed by the end of the week before the weekend most of the time, or if not then there is a lot of information gathered by then (a lot of it gathered by those who do update daily). And I also don’t want to fix broken stuff after work and rather do that when I have time on weekends.
That’s just OCD imo. I update every month or so. I’ve disabled every notification related to available updates and once in a blue moon when I’m bored I just type yay to see what’s new. However, discord refuses to start if it’s not on the latest version, so it’s usually discord the one that makes me update
Remember this is not Windows. You have control, you decide when you want to update. That being said, you might encounter some problems if you go many moons between updates.
