After testing Thunderbird 115 beta, I need a new mail client, recommendations?

I have tried several mail clients and I have always ended using the web interface.
You can always create a web app for the web page:

It wasn’t working with protonmail Bridge for me but, in any event, I don’t think Geary supports aliases yet.

Ive used Thunderbird for years on Windows and never had an issue. :man_shrugging:

I’ve had zero issues with their phone app. That works great for me.

I am sure the phone app is fine.
The screenshots I posted are both from the desktop using (Ungoogled-) Chromium to make the PWA.

Update to my earlier comment. Upon closer look, Evolution brings up couple Webkit processes along with it. Altogether, it’s still lower memory than Thunderbird, but not as overwhelming a difference.

I just started using Zoho’s email platform for my web site. It supports multiple OS’s, including mobile. If you have a domain and server, you might want to try it out. The spam filter works great.

I perefer a installed standalone mail application on my machine.

Have you tried the TB115 beta? Their new UI confuses me and has some (for me) very annoying features which make me think about switching my mail client.

That’s a commercial application, not what I am looking for. Just want a different mail client on my machine thanThunderbird.

Here is a list of mail clients from ArchWiki:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_of_applications#Email_clients

It looks quite exhaustive. Should pretty much cover most of preferences for majority of the users.

This might also be worth to have a look at:

Please let us know which one you choose at the end and why.

I don’t find it that bad. I added the menu to the top again by going into the hamburger menu top right under view, toolbars.

Edit:

I have used TB for years as well. My only issue is what happened and yes I understand that any software update can create issues. I was lucky that I retain backups. I will not likely drop Thunderbird but I will seek an alternative so that if it fails again I have a goto that works. Thats really my only beef with TB if that makes sense.

The best email client in my opinion is Claws Mail but it doesn’t support httml mails. I don’t send html mails often but there are situations when I need it.

That massively oversized search bar annoys me pretty much. And even it you remove it, the space it consumes still sits there, empty, useless, wasting sreen real estate.

I’m satisfied with how it works. That is what is most important to me. The visual aspect and the idea of wasted screen real estate doesn’t have any bearing. :man_shrugging:

@Jeannie

Please don’t get me wrong but since you seem to have very specific ideas about the graphical interface of your ideal mail client, perhaps you might consider sharing those with the developers of the Thunderbird. I am sure they would appreciate it.

They don’t, really. An example: there are basic feature requests like tray icon that are older than 10 years. There’s a lot of activity on those requests with a lot of backers but no declared intent on the developers’ side to take it into consideration.

Here’s a short overview of which mail clients I have tried so far and which experiences I made:
Kube: Doesn’t start up due to libKF5Mime.so.5 missing.
KMail: Won’t accept my imap address, so I can’t log in to the mail server
Betterbird: No minimize to tray.
Evolution: Incredibly small font size, found no way to change this.
Mailspring: Looks interresting, requires more testing in daily use.
Will look into more clients tomorrow.

Evolution is Gnome, so presumably GTK, right? Did you try starting it with env GDK_SCALE=2 evolution or env GDK_DPI_SCALE=2 evolution?
