After 18 years of longing, I’m at last on Linux

Hi there, about three-ish months ago, give or take, i decided to try Linux again, since I had heard so much about how playing computer games had improved a lot.

I tried Ubuntu Linux in 2007 probably. I remember there was a promotional video on the dvd that included an interview with Nelson Mandela, where he explains the concept of Ubuntu.

I liked it a lot, so I very sad when I realised that my favourite computer games didn’t work on it.

Since then I have tried Linux about once a year, to see what the state of gaming is, and every year I have grown more annoyed with Microsoft.

This year, I decided on Arch Linux, because I figured that since SteamOS was based on it, driver and proton support would be best and most up to date.

Because I’m so new to Linux though, I decided that trying to install Arch from scratch with my inexperience wouldn’t go well for me, so I decided on EndeavourOS, and have been very happy with that decision.

I started with KDE Plasma, but I quickly became enamoured with the command line, and after trying out different programmes, wanted to see if I could run a framebuffer terminal instead of Plasma for most most things, and reserve Plasma for playing games.

After some experimentation, I decided that I was too inexperienced for that, and instead installed Sway with rofi-wayland, and have been very happy with that choice.

I have tried to figure out as much as possible by myself or through search engines, but the state of google has become so bad that startpage.com is almost unusable, so that a bing derivative is currently the best search engine, ie duckduckgo. :joy:

So within a week I have had two questions, that I couldn’t answer myself, so I believe introductions are in order.

Pleased to meet you all, I’m Voldemortan.

100% accurate ^^^ and DDG getting worse too. Endeavour Forum for questions much much much better.

2007 you took your games and went home and let Linux ripen for 18 years. Welcome back.

2017 was when the disgust level was no longer bearable for me. Never looked back. I thought ‘can I do all my work/professional stuff on Linux?’ The answer was yes immediately.

You chose Endeavour. Dig it.

Oh the state of gaming has been so great that I haven’t needed a guide yet, but thank you very much.

For my laptop, the only issue was dealing with having an intel cpu with integrated gpu as well as a better discreet amd gpu, was slightly frustrating, but such a common problem that I easily found the solution even with the state of google.

Concerning my desktop pc, there haven’t been any issues at all, even with its nvidia gpu.

The games themselves run great, and if there is a problem, I just try a different proton build. protonup-qt-bin from the AUR has been great in that respect, it has allowed the use of proton-ge-custom, and that has solved every problem I’ve had so far, although to be fair there haven’t been many.

I even managed to use HeroLab on Lutris, which I had not expected.

HeroLab is a program that helps you build and manage your Pathfinder 1e tabletop roleplaying character. You know that a tabletop roleplaying game is too complex when a program or spreadsheet is needed to manage your character. :joy:
