I think a lot of the problem you’re having is psychological to be honest - you’ve just found out windows has been lying to you for years about what a .txt file is meant to contain
You’ll get there!

Windows — the Great Deceiver!
Ok, half of me wants to go “looool” the other half wants to cry… So I’ll do both, don’t think there is an emoji for that.
Probm is, crp my keyboar lights srtelashi batery gong out, talk more morrow
Glad that amused you guys, what I was actually trying to type there at the end(for those who didn’t get it) is:
“crap my keyboard lights started flashing battery going out, talk more tomorrow”
So yeah, my keyboard basically died because I decided to stay at the pc 20 minutes more past the time I usually just queue up a movie/some episodes and some youtube vids and just watch those from the bed for 2 hours or so before I turn in. Not sure this part is relevant or anyone cares(might be the best time to test the spoiler tag option) but there you have it.
Now back on topic, what I was acutally gonna write before the whole keyboard part was:
Problem is I have never used/created a script in my entire life, AI or no AI, so I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this cause it’s intimidating as hell for me.
For example once I have a script how do I… activate it? install it? F me, you see?! ?! I don’t even know what the proper terminology is, let alone how to actually use the bloody thing…
I’m not even sure if I should bother googling this part since(I assume at least) there are probably a million ways to use scripts so googling “how to use a script” might be like searching for a needle in a haystack…?
Sigh, guess it’s never too late to learn something new, in theory at least…
Ok then, apart from teaching me how to use it, before I do something dumb, can someone pretty please check the code of this Lua script that I was recommended on the Double Commander forums so I don’t get infected or something?
(I’m not sure if just because something is uploaded on github that automatically means it’s 100% safe)
You actually are more than likely using scripts all the time and just didn’t realize that is what they are. So please relax enjoy learn and have FUN.
since the script in question is for your program Double Commander that is something you need to find out for that program. For some its as simple as placing the script in x folder and the next run the script will be listed in the menu. For others there may be other steps involved.
I’m not a programmer nor do I know Lua so not much help but from what I see it looks ok. I personally would wait for someone with a bit more knowlege of that language to chime in though before using it.
I see, I see… Cool, thank you for the info.
Ok, I’ll wait and hope someone with Lua experience comes along.
The mention of scripts wasn’t to say that you should use one. I was just telling you what I use AI for — automating tasks via bash scripts.
What I am suggesting to you is to use AI for troubleshooting.
I had AI create a Qt- and Python-based Obsidian clone some time ago, and each time I got an error, I copied it then pasted it into the AI to make it fix the issue. When troubleshooting with AI, it’s important to give information like your distro, DE/WM, X11/Wayland, etc.
PS: The Obsidian clone is not ready for even an alpha release and I have not tried to open or edit the code in a while, so don’t ask.
To play devil’s advocate, I personally wouldn’t start trying to feed AI problems to solve until you have a decent enough background in what the AI is giving you back to recognise if it’s actually something useful or if it’s just making things up that are unhelpful at best and potentially system-breaking at worst.
Remember: AI isn’t actually “AI”, at its core it’s just an extremely turbocharged version of the same thing that’s been trying to autocomplete text messages on your phone until it annoys you enough to work out how to turn it off for the last 20 years
Mashing together a bunch of indexed information based on a black box of weighted options that even the people who built it can’t really explain does not make “Intelligence”
This is all true. Your technical knowledge of Linux, code, commands, etc. can determine a lot when it comes to the usefulness of what a chatbot would provide.
It’s kinda why I gave them a little hint about what to provide to their chatbot of choice. But in the end, if they aren’t knowledgeable enough about the important stuff, then even with detailed instructions, the code provided by the AI may as well be like any other software that most users don’t understand.
It either works or it doesn’t, and they can’t fix it themselves.
Morning, again, everyone. Hope you’re having a good one.
Haven’t been around much for the past 2 days since I had to deal with some health stuff, but I’m back now.
Ok then if the mention of scripts wasn’t meant to mean I should use one(which I would really like to second, I really don’t feel I’m ready for that yet, specially if I would have to use AI, yuck!!!) then can someone please help me use DC’s built in tools??
This was the second options recommended on the DC forums, but I spent an hour or more reading the documentation here(scroll down until 2.23. File associations) and here(scroll down until 2.4. File Operations) and while I tried a ton of stuff(here are just a few examples 1, 2, 3) nothing worked and I don’t understand why…
Any chance someone with more experience could take a look at that and tell me what I am doing wrong please?
Like Abiword, Double Commander users are far and few between in comparison to Midnight Commander.

MC: https://pkgstats.archlinux.de/packages?query=mc
To clarify the suggestion of AI:
You can use it to have it explain documentation to you. It will pull from different sources while also giving detailed instructions and explanations.
Example Prompt:
How to configure Double Commander’s file associations on Arch Linux. Please explain each function in detail. // How to configure Double Commander’s cm_WorkWithDirectoryHotlist operation on Arch Linux.
You can add more details based on what you want to do.
That said, this documentation looks like it’s well-written and easy to understand.
Maybe but, no offence, MC looks like… I forgot it’s name but there was a thing you would run under dos back in the 90’s that looked exactly like that, so no thanks.
Ok well if it’s well-written and easy to understand
could you please give me some pointers as to what I am doing wrong? Cause like I said I spent over an hour on it and I still don’t get it… maybe I’m just stupid, but there it is.
Wasn’t suggesting that you use it. Just giving you some stats to help set some expectations on the likelihood of you getting someone with experience in DC to guide you.
This is why I have recommended an AI chatbot.
This is the only thing they are truly useful for at the moment (and some other tedious or repetitive tasks). They can automatically gather information from multiple sources and give you instructions based on what others have said.
Try it out (or don’t): https://www.perplexity.ai/search/how-to-configure-double-comman-cL9_qvfISQm11lNGjfzXCA
The above uses the previous example prompt. If you need different info explained, then clear URL so it only says, “https://www.perplexity.ai”.
Sigh, I’ve always been like that, seldom that one to make the popular choice. Not the first time it’s bitten me in the arse…
Ok, I’ll give it a shot tomorrow morning, though I have to say I am really apprehensive about ai and really dislike this whole “ai craze” we seem to be going through.
Thanks for the link.
I’m on Linux too. I don’t like the popular, either.
As far as an “ai craze” is concerned, it only truly applies to image generation and other unimportant usages.
For technical stuff, like learning how to use and configure an atypical file manager, it’s actually a good deal practical.
Guess I’ll find out, but if it laughs at me I’M OUT!!!
I think I mentioned I was like this, one thing I do is look up the sites they reference as well. Can help you to understand more in some cases or help you determine if the information is relevant. I was going around in circles the other day telling the AI it was wrong so no where near perfect.
Haven’t had it laugh at me yet, maybe I should try ask it some really out there question.
Well it hasn’t laughed at me yet and I just asked it if the sun I saw yesterday is the same sun as I saw yesterday and kept following up the question by questioning if it was sure about the answers it was giving and that i still wasn’t convinced
F it, I’m done, I give up! Wasted another hour today with the ai trying all kinds of bs both with file associations and templates and whatever and while it didn’t actually laugh at me, nothing worked. I’m done, guess I’ll never have this feature…
What I do when I get like this is stick what’s bothering me to the side. It’s not essential and causing you grief so take a breather wait til you learn a bit more and come back to it when your ready.
If I gave up everytime I hit a barrier like this I would never make wallpapers, splashscreens and the game I’m working on would have been abandoned about 2 days in.
