This is the issue, I believe.
If you are using rich text in Abiword, but save the file as .txt, then the rich text disappears because you didn’t save the file in a rich text format. This happens with Markdown too.
You must save in a rich text format, or you will not have rich text when the doc is reopened.
For some reason, saving as .odt doesn’t work properly. Don’t know why. But also, I noticed that Abiword crashes randomly.
Just did a check: when the .odt file is opened in LibreOffice, it shows the text properly. But it does have it in a box for some reason.
