A discussion on the ownership of (digital) intellectual property

A patent is simply a monopoly. You are not allowed to compete with me, because I had an idea first.

A monopoly is always harmful.

If it’s any consolation, copyright laws only matter in the short term (in the lifetime of the property ‘owner’, e.g). Nowadays, anyone can download a copy of Euclid’s Elements without being taken to the gallows for property theft.

All patents limit the advancement of tech, medical ect.

For example 3D printing is a old tech, but we all heard of it because the patent was finished and companies started to produce them in masse.

Also, bIg pharma is responsible of lots of death with they high cost medicaments that cost 0.1% of the price to produce.

Big companies have the money to enforce they patents/copyrights and little one or individual don’t. They’re also lots a examples of patents trolls.

If humanity has happened where it is now, it is only because we have the knowledge of our ancestors who set the ground before us.

For me, patents/copyrights are almost (depend of the day :face_with_hand_over_mouth:) a crime against humanity.

Actually, this is more frustrating.

  • If this is true, who decided so?
  • Who has the power to decline or approve ownership of intellectual property?
  • If someone has that kind of power, then the problem is him, not what we think about it.
  • I argue that if there is Copyright protection of intellectual property, it should be active for ever, or not exist at all. Else, there is no other sense than someone wants to make money

If our dear ΕυÎșÎ»Î”ÎŻÎŽÎ·Ï‚ had the right to ask for money for any of his ideas, we would still travel on foot. And this is equivalent of the Copyright Laws agenda.

Nevertheless, there is an opinion that such laws were invented because of the abuse. I disagree, or I would rephrase it. These laws are taking advantage of the lack of civility and dignity of our societies (or whatever fits your imaginative world we live in), with only one target; deposit and control the money.

Let me raise a question and another interesting word:

Does each original idea (invention, inspired art, etc) have any value? If so, how can we compare intellctual products values against more pragmatic, like fruits, or water?

In other words, diving into examples  , if we were living in the times of Aristophanes, or Shakespeare, would we accept a law about them getting food, shelter, and more valuable products for free?
What about the same question for Elon Musk, Linus Torvalds, Rich Stallman, Tesla, etc?

Nobody decides so. It will happen eventually when there is no longer any money to be made.

Untrue! The copyright does last for 50 years after the death of the author. It also depends on which Country you are in.

Edit: In the US it’s generally up to 70 years.

copyright god

Generative AI says that’s the decision maker here

Laws in every Country including yours!

I remember reading somewhere that Disney has managed to extend that. I don’t spend much of my time reading about such things so someone else probably knows more details.

There some that extend to 120 years.

Yes, Rick, you’ve got it finally.
It is not about ethics, or the right thing. Some people, with flesh and blood decide about it. Why? Are they smarter than you? OK, I rephrase. Are they smarter than myself with full justification? (do they even know me?)

That’s insane that it can extend that long!

The irony is that the value of intellectual products might not even be realized at all if access to them are prohibited. A powerful intergalactic vehicle might never be built because the person/people smart enough to build it did not have access to its initial prototype.

Just because certain people don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Get over it! Such nonsense. I’ve get better things to think about. A patent or copyright is the least of them.

Oh boy
Certain people standing in front of Nuremberg trials had some of those arguments in their defense

P.S. What i mean by that; law is not a God in space that you must bow down to, it can be deeply immoral, senseless, stupid or just plain evil. What to do about that however is obviously our own choice. I choose Judas priest :sunglasses:

I think you have been misguided.
Everything in Endeavour OS Distribution is fundamentally based on the current discussion topic.

And the majority of Linux users do not even know or realize this at the minimum, or at all.

If this is the information how to build the product and you build that product and sell it, you damaged my business by copying the information and by sing the information.
