A discussion on the ownership of (digital) intellectual property

How about this? While it may be possible to express software as a series of ones and zeros, that it not all software is. It is, in part, the time, talents, efforts, and expertise of the people who created it. They may choose to freely give it (as in the case of this operating system, for example), but to discount all of that as valueless is just wrong. You want to argue that patent and copyright laws are flawed? Ok, I agree, they are. However, that does not entitle you, me, or anyone to appropriate anotherā€™s work without their consent.
.
Instead of feeling entitled to the creative and technical work of others, maybe try cultivating an appreciation for their talents? In the case where itā€™s given to you, maybe even a sense of gratitude?

Indeed, thatā€™s what voluntary donations are for!

Or in case of FOSS projects specifically you can also help by participation, be it code, debug, translations etc.

Now thatā€™sā€¦weird.
You can do anything you want without ever asking anyone for permission, as defined by free software.

The Four Essential Freedoms of Free Software

  • The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).

  • The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

  • The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).

  • The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

Well iā€™m still waiting for all the money you owe me for John Cageā€™s 4ā€™33"!

You hurt his intellectual property very much by making silence.

The whole topic started out as digital property and now intellectual property. Not even the same thing. Digital property is related to information that a person has created online whether it be in this forum or Facebook or Instagram etc. There arenā€™t that many laws regarding this on the books right now but they are being written as we speak. Intellectual property is a whole other topic and i havenā€™t heard anything here that is of any sense what so ever with respect to the current laws that exist in most countries.

Edit: Then there is tangible and intangible property and the list goes on. I refer to the laws that are written in my country and the US because those the only ones that would possibly have an affect on my life. Other than that i donā€™t believe in others opinions about stuff they think they know. Iā€™m not a lawyer and Iā€™m not an expert lawyer specifically on these laws and these matters. I can only go by the current laws that are written that would affect me in my country and my understanding of them.

The rest is just ā€¦ opinions!

Edit: Anyone can have an opinion but it doesnā€™t make it so!

Yes and all laws are equal also but they donā€™t necessarily get applied equally.

If you post on FB, you already given up any digital property.

Are you saying that because theyā€™re laws, we shouldnā€™t challenge them ?

Also, i canā€™t find your message so a canā€™t quote it. Its not because its a law that its morally right. In fact most laws have nothing to do with morality.

Sorry but you are wrong! Laws are currently being written or updated or already passed in this Country specifically to deal with that!

Edit: Laws and morality are two different things. Can a law be unjust? Sure? Can a law be immorral? Maybe thatā€™s your opinion ā€¦not necessarily mine.

@GolDNenex

Not really interested in a back and forth on this so you can have your opinion. Iā€™ll stick to the laws that affect me personally on a need to know basis.

The law donā€™t let me change the color of my wooden shutters by myself, i need to ask them if its possible and they will restrict my choose of colors. Just imagine that i want them pink ā€¦ So immoral ā€¦ :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Edit: 2 days of rewatching is videos, finally found it, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzDf9eXmlZU, you can look the video entirely but at 2:35 he talk about laws and morality, if you interested  Sorry its in baguette.
