Hello, everyone. When I updated the system, I got this error: Installing audit (4.2.1-1) breaks the dependency on “audit=4.1.4,” which is required for the lib32-audit package. I’ve tried removing the items listed, one by one, but that just gives me other potential errors. Can you tell me what I should do? Thanks.
Okay, I figured it out (by unchecking “multilib” in pacman.conf—it was commented out with a #). Thanks anyway.
Hi @creepy71 and welcome to the

Thank you
Small suggestion. When you post a question it would be best:
- Create a meaningful Title summarizing the problem
- When you describe the issue you can quote what you are seeing in the terminal. This should include the error you are seeing.
- If you were using Shelly as your package manager, please include this as well.
This will help others who are searching and may have the same issue as you.
Example of a Question with this kind of information:
I’m having an identical error down to the version number when updating, except multilib was already uncommented in my pacman.conf. Should I post a new topic on that or is it okay to ask about it in here because of their similarities?
lib32-audit isn’t in the multilib repos, it’s an AUR package.
See this thread from a few hours ago:
Thank you, I appreciate the fast reply. I’ll try and be quick so I don’t take over the topic. I followed your link, checked the dependencies required by lib32-audit and followed that chain to the end. Luckily for me each one only had the other dependent on each other. For thoroughness that chain of packages was: lib32-pam, lib32-libcap, lib32-gstreamer, and lib32-gst-plugins-base-libs. I looked them up, saw that lib32-audit was orphaned 3 days ago, had pacman list out all orphaned packages on the system and after reviewing, removed them. Now the update is running successfully.
Any further issues I might run into will be off-topic.
Thank you again for the help.
For the record, these are not the same things. “Orphan” has 2 different meanings, which is on display here.
lib32-audit is an orphaned AUR package, meaning that it has no dedicated maintainer to keep the package updated from upstream.
But when pacman searches for orphaned packages on your system, what it is showing is packages that were originally installed as a dependency of another package, but that dependency no longer exists (because the originating package was removed or it no longer requires that specific dependency any more).
These are 2 very different types of orphan. So pacman -Qdtq will not find that an installed AUR package no longer has a maintainer. Yay, however, will report that during an AUR update.
I had the same issue after a much-delayed system update. Solved it by
sudo pacman -R lib32-audit lib32-pam lib32-libcap
Have no idea why those packages were installed in the first place (since nothing else seemed to depend on them).
Thanks, that solved the issue…
only place i found that gave the command
