Youtube-dl Github Repo Taken Down

Well said, and I’ve come to the same conclusion; power, control and data-mine/earn, not people and life, are their focus. The linked article references how one of the reasons is that they don’t like certain videos being downloaded before they can be banned. The more there is developed and safeguarded beyond the cloud, available for offline, and personally owned, the better! That becomes more precious every day, and I have nothing but respect for anyone involved in that or championing that.

I’ve used youtube-dl many many times to download tutorial videos back in the days when I was on a low bandwidth connection. Streaming was simply not an option on that network. I did make it a point to go back to the video on youtube and drop a like and comment.

Here in India, those low bandwidth days aren't yet a thing of past. Most people cannot afford a decent network connection, and worse, many locations don't even have wired broadband service offerings. During this covid period, the only option for a majority students in the country would've been to download the lecture videos from youtube and watch offline.

Edit: About me - My family got a wired connection after the lockdown started. Work from home and online classes are a pain on the slow mobile network.

I use youtube-dl and most normal people download a video to watch that’s already available on youtube to watch anyway!

Another despicable attempt to nip freedom of the individual in the bud

That’s our reality, exactly…
Couldn’t reflect it better myself.

We must oppose that dystopian bs for freedom! :enos_flag:

I’m sure devs of youtube-dl will find home on GitLab or private git repo, there are many FOSS solutions.

uuugh  makes my skin crawl every time i hear that, at least i’m not alone! :frog:

What else should be of any interest in late capitalism?

One wonder how long it takes them to find the p.y.p.i package … install it using python package manager

I can still install via pacman. Backed up the latest copy of package just in case something unexpected happens.

I use the video download helper extension in Firefox, to make it work you have to install vdhcoapp from the AUR.

I’d say, if we’re smart about it, we all collectively would need to stop:

  1. Selling good products like GitHub to Microsoft / Google or whatever (which is not doable for the most part)

  2. Vote with our principles = leave compromised platforms / products and clearly & loudly explain why in abandoned repositories.

I’d say it’s long ago that all conscious devs should move infrastructure away from GitHub to whatever else, including EndeavourOS (one of my first posts here was about that btw :upside_down_face: ) - because it is simply not safe and not future proof.

No Surprise really, I did say when Microshaft bought Github for people to get off of it. Because I knew Microshaft would start doing this …expect more of the same.

That’s the trouble though, people don’t stick together, they either don’t understand the situation or don’t care.

I mean…Smart was a big IF
Still though, a lot of us know what’s going on.

Just to point out, this is not Microsoft removing things they don’t like, it’s GitHub responding to a legal requirement. It doesn’t matter which US company or body owns a US-hosted GitHub: they have to comply with a DMCA notice.

If you don’t want to worry about US copyright law then don’t host things in the US. That’s the same as it has always been.

There are plenty of Git repo hosts in China. Good luck getting them to respond to a DMCA notice.

100% agree. If no clear action is taken against github or anyone who’s against genuine free software, they just power on doing worse and worse. Better to be situated outside of that, and have maximum security and peace of mind; otherwise these types suck up all the energy, causing worries and stress that aren’t necessary, as well as direct threat. Better to take any power they think they have at this point away.

Best to not always believe media etc; there are paid trolls, including microsoft trolls (that shows very clearly sometimes when looking at r/linux, I think). And the purpose is to depress and dishearten people; makes taking over easier for them. I think there are far more people who are pro-privacy; probably waiting for a figurehead/group to gather and organise things and get things in motion more.

Definitely very cheering e.g. to see how many people here really care about privacy. Far more than I’ve encountered previously on a forum.

I can’t help but have a strong impression that big tech and the government work together. Reading various linux and tech news outlets it’s surprising how often the same things appear to be coordinated, one particular action happening one week, and all of big tech doing similar in the same week. And such as Google get tax breaks despite muddying the platform/publisher stuff. They all seem to get away with so much, yet aren’t challenged on that.

It would have been a fantastic opportunity for MS to really stand up for open source software; they’re certainly rich enough to fight a case. I’m seeing the EFF statement, with others commenting saying there are numerous legal ways this can be countered, and, if it’s not, it’s going to set a very dangerous precedent.

One comment says yt-dl.org will stay up, as it’s hosted in Germany.
