Yay complains about running makepkg as rewt during eos-update - Solved

I was using eos-update without issue for a while, then it started failing with an error from yay about running makepkg as root while updating my -aur stuff.

I simply use the yay version of update from the welcome tool and it does not complain.

I did not see a solution for this while searching so … here it is.

Curious.
…are you running eos-update as root (don’t)? I’m not quite sure why yay would be trying to run as root.

When you click eos-update from the menu as a normal user:

==> eos-update --aur
eos-update: package updater with additional features
Updating native and AUR apps…
[sudo] password for juan:

As you can see, it wants the password for sudo.

so no, I am not running it as root, it is behaving as intended normally, no?

AFAIK eos-update --aur updates both system packages and aur packages. You need sudo for system packages. Maybe @manuel can clarify.

Could have anything to do with this problem maybe, but that was about 20 days ago. So if you update e.g. once a week or so that wouldn’t be possible I guess.

I’ve been updating whenever discord pitches a fit and won’t launch without updating, which is usually weekly.

Yes, eos-update --aur is updating both native and AUR packages. It will use sudo for things that require elevated privileges, but not to anything else.

Note that if there’s e.g. an alias of function called eos-update that wraps /bin/eos-update, that might cause different behavior.
The output of command type eos-update could show if that’s the case.

@JuanDaringMann
We need the

  • full command line, and
  • full output

to see more details about the problem. Otherwise we are only guessing what might be wrong.

TLDR: It ain’t broke - I was trying (badly) to explain how I solved my issue with this error.

I was using eos-update without issue for a while, then it started failing with an error from yay about running makepkg as root while updating my -aur stuff.

I simply wanted to share how I got around this particular error as I found nothing about it using the forum search function. Searching the entire internet shows this is not specific to EndeavourOS and is about Arch and pacman, and how running makepkg as rewt is verboten.

I simply use the yay version of update from the welcome tool and it does not complain.
I did not see a solution for this while searching so … here it is.

The link shown by keescase is actually what prompted me to try the yay version of system update.

I assumed (sorry) that by placing “-Solved” directly in the title of the post and using the phrase “does not complain” would indicate success. In *nix no news is good news amirite?

Thie following is a Scientific Wild Azzed Guess:

Since eos-update utilizes pacman ( package manager ) to manage update packages and hands off recompiling duties to yay for the --aur portion, it somehow does not tell yay to be -nobody or something while running makepkg where the YAY version of system update does. I could be wrong, but it worked.

I thought a quick post would help others in the future experiencing the same issue.

I apologize for any confusion with regard to my lack of proficient precision prose, English was never my best subject.

@JuanDaringMann, I can appreciate you were trying to share a solution (I did note that). What you shared was more of a workaround, and didn’t really address the alleged issue in eos-update. I thought we might try to pin that down, because :

  • That doesn’t sound normal.
  • If it’s an issue in the tool, it can likely be fixed.

@manuel is on the ball with respect to these things.
