From my experience in order of less pain to set up scaling and support for external monitor with nvidia and 4k, I can recommend gnome>cinnamon>kde>xfce

I am not talking about which DE is better, I actually like most of them! But none is perfect…

Edit: and I like also setting up dual monitor either using arandr or autorandr. Having to type in Xrandr commands every time i start up - #2 by freebird54
