Windows update breaks dual boot setup

I have linux on one of my drives and windows on another. I am using the uefi boot manager. After any windows updates, I cant boot into windows, my motherboard bios or my boot manager. When I start my computer, it does not show my motherboard logo, it just shows “hdmi, not signal”, and then boots into linux without showing the boot menu. I cant boot into the bios with terminal commands in linux aswell. This has happened before and I fixed it by doing random things like cutting power to the pc for a short while and changing which display port my monitor is connected to.

I dont have a usb drive with me atm so I cant repair it using that so right now, I’m kinda stuck

Also, when I run “efibootmgr”, it shows, apart from my current linux and windows boot managers, two fedora boot managers. I installed fedora before wiped it from my pc so its weird thats still there.Honestly I have no idea whether that actually plays any part in this but thought I should give the info.

Update : now linux is not even turning on. The screen is just black

It sounds like you’re describing issues with the UEFI, which is persistent in non-volative storage on your MB. This is normal and requires cleanup (which is touchy and to my way of thinking somewhat dangerous, it’s not easy to restore a deleted EFI).
What I would do….though i hope someone else has better advise, nuke everything :slight_smile: (using efibootmgr) and restore everything (requires booting from some other device like your usb drive) for all OSs.
Also consider researching if there are BIOS updates for your MB.

Without knowing anything about what system you have, it will be difficult to troubleshoot this.
Not be able to get into the BIOS sounds a lot like a hardware problem of some sort i would say (corrupted BIOS comes to mind , but I am guessing here.). On another note do you share the efi (esp) partition with Windows, or did you create a separate efi partition when installing Linux. If sharing the wfi partition with Windows this can cause problems with the Linux bootloader. Also your efi partiton might be not large enough.
