Wifi Stopped Working

I noticed that Wifi quit working for me. I am using broadcom-wl-dkms. Seems like it’s not working on any of the desktops i have installed. I installed kde tonight and it worked as soon as i rebooted it but stopped working sometime after. I have a connection also to Ethernet so i wasn’t using Wifi but noticed now it’s not working and i checked all 3 installs on separate drives and they are all not working. Doesn’t even see Wifi. This is strange as i have used this for the last number of years with no issues. Anyone else with Broadcom notice any issue?

Maybe TLP powersaves it and can’t resume?
There are constantly changes in there, try to disable it’s wi-fi powersaving or TLP completely to check if that’s the case :wink:

I don’t use TLP and it’s a desktop.

Well i asked because sometimes you can forget even on desktop…

Ok, then i’m not sure what else except issue with driver / Kernel :frowning:

Yes. It doesn’t show any kernel module loaded.

Edit: This must have happened since the 5.8.5 kernel update

I tried to downgrade to 5.8.4 kernel.

==> dkms remove --no-depmod -m broadcom-wl -v 6.30.223.271 -k 5.8.5-arch1-1
==> depmod 5.8.5-arch1-1
:: Processing package changes...

==> Unable to install module broadcom-wl/6.30.223.271 for kernel 5.8.4-arch1-1: Missing kernel modules tree.
[ricklinux@eos-xfce ~]$

Edit: I realized it was missing the kernel headers but it still didn’t help downgrading. Wifi still isn’t working.

Seems like the kernel modules are missing? I have downgraded and still can’t get it working.

Which broadcom do you have ?

Right now I’m updating my Ultrabox with Broadcom 43142 to see if it works and I’ll let you know.
Please wait a little.

Tell me which kernel you are working with at broadcom ?
I have all 4 kernels on my laptop

I have the newer Broadcom chips BCM4360 and never had any issues until now. Just noticed it wasn’t working since the latest kernels but i can’t seem to understand why.

25:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 03)
	Subsystem: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries Device 0619

Edit: I use broadcom-wl-dkms

So do I.

modprobe bcm4360

?

It works without problems broadcom43142.

Let’s see:

lspci -nnk | grep -i -A3 net
sudo dmesg | grep -i firmware
rfkill list all

Thanks I’ll try this later tonight when off work.

What did you do to downgrade?

If you are running 5.8.5 and install 5.8.4 then the 5.8.5 modules will vanish from disk (same as an upgrade).

If you didn’t e.g. dkms autoinstall for 5.8.4 then you won’t be able to load the kernel modules.

However, it could be a regression in 5.8.5 as I saw my network break earlier when testing linux-lqx, Liquorix kernel 5.8.5 available - now with Clear Linux and MuQSS patches . 5.8.6 has recently been released (https://www.spinics.net/lists/announce-kernel/msg03221.html) so it might help.

I realized after downgrading to 5.8.4 kernel that I needed to downgrade the headers too. I don’t do this very often so I forget about what I need to do. I’m not sure when the Wifi quit working because we went fairly quickly from 5.8.2 to 5.8.5 kernel. I never noticed as I have it connected to ethernet but wifi is always in background also or was until now. Since I noticed it not working I’m trying to figure out why. It seems like it’s a kernel problem but I don’t know without some checking. I have always used broadcom-wl-dkms and never have an issue until now.

@jonathon

I think i need some help here. I have not ever had any problem with this wifi in the past. I see this in th log.

Edit: Just an F.Y.I. I did add acpi=noirq because of no vector irq some time ago but i don’t think this is the reason it stopped working.
