It is generally a good idea to have a second kernel installed, because sometimes a kernel (or other software) update may temporarily break something. Fortunately breaking happens quite rarely, and here on the forum you will see announcements if that happens. With a second kernel readily available you’ll have a better chance to continue working as usual.
