What's up with plymouth?

I was using mkinitcpio and grub before and it worked fine with the previous release. My install was bloating up so I reinstalled to clean things up with latest iso. I decided to choose and go with systemd-boot because of stability issues with grub. I tried to get plymouth working. Just shows me the OEM logo most of the time and the showed my the animation for a little while and then went to the lock screen. I hid it with a kernel parameter and then the OEM logo just hid (and the screen was black most of the times) and the the animation came for 2 seconds and I went to the lock screen. I want it to come the second my laptop starts booting just like it used to before. Any ideas?

I did some digging up and this seems to be the issue: Early KMS start
this used to work with mkinitcpio when adding the i915 driver to modules section
now even after adding it in dracut.conf, it doesn’t seem to work. Any ideas?

Can you explain exactly what you changed and how you tested it?

When I was using grub and mkinitcpio the animation used to show up when my laptop booted. Now with systemd boot and dracut it shows up for a little while and shows the Dell logo most of the time. The shutdown animation works. I had this issue with mkinitcpio when I forgot to add the i915 driver to modules section in the config file. I am unable to find something similar in dracut.

Sorry, I mean, what was the specific config you added to dracut and what commands did you run after you added that config.

Screenshot_20230223_203343
Screenshot_20230223_203410
I created earlykms.conf in this directory and then ran sudo dracut --force but it didn’t work.

That won’t do anything useful.

You need to run sudo dracut-rebuild

Tried it, still no dice

I think for early KMS you need to use force_drivers, not add_drivers

Tried it. Same behaviour.

Can we see the full output of sudo dracut-rebuild

Nice move, kiddo abandon a thread in the middle of the conversation. Amazing community .

The module does not seem included.
Post:

Hello everyone! I’m having almost the same issue here with my XPS 9320.

Using Fedora it asks me for the luks password in that nice graphical screen, but no dice with EOS.

I’m think it’s partially working because it shows the spinner during the shutdown.

Maybe it’s /etc/dracut.conf.d/calamares-luks.conf that needs a different install_item?

I’m using systemd-boot because I know grub has issues with luks (unlocking the encrypted drive takes a long time with grub). I installed from scratch two days ago.

Additionally I installed aur/plymouth 22.02.122-4 (+580 1.29) (Installed: 22.02.122-4.1).

Do I need something like this: aur/gdm-plymouth 43.0-1 (+83 0.13)?

Thanks!

Now It’s working, I forgot this:

/etc/dracut.conf.d/cmdline.conf
kernel_cmdline+=" splash quiet loglevel=3 systemd.show_status=auto rd.udev.log_level=3 "

Then I rebuilt the initram using sudo dracut-rebuild

Gratitude!
