I’ve seen this one, it ends badly ![]()
I suspect it’s all an insurance scam… Musk probably needs more money
It’s just space junk that is caught in the moons gravity, NASA purposefully did it in 2009
I think they will make a new film about it, with MuskRat™ in the starring role (not that any of his rockets will reach them. The stars, that is).
A suitable title …?
“Cratermass and the Twit” ![]()
at worst a new small crater… it’s an ant hitting a mountain. It’s probably just Musk showing off again…
It is space junk, part of a booster rocket thats been floating around
I’m just surprised people still have enough energy left themselves, for all that cheering every time an Ex-Space-X™ rocket explodes, but I guess the cost of paying off all the “supporters” in the audience is peanuts compared to all that fuel etc.. ![]()
An Ego Booster? Mr Musk doesn’t need any more of that. ![]()
you read so much about all the stuff (junk) up there that is making its way, or is in, the earth’s orbit lined up to crash…that it never occurred to me that the moon had one too. Eagle/boosters/landed…duh…made me wonder what is floating out there that gets pulled into the moon’s gravity? Like a loose tile, things like that?
then I thought what lies between the earth’s gravity field and the moon’s? About 10,000 miles of ‘space’?
I shouldn’t take breaks..
Yer the amount of junk up there is insane.
More like around 200,000 miles…
my estimate was conservative
for sure. It’s always stunning how close it is edit: when you look in the sky
Yeah, and then you think about how all those tiny stars are actually gigantic suns, many with planets orbiting them, and you try to fathom just how far away they are…well, I don’t know about you, but when I think about that stuff, I always reach for another drink.
I love the stars are suns (most) with their own planets. Mind-blowing enough, I think Donald Sutherland in Animal House explained this well except he didn’t reach for a drink…and that’s the thing at this age for me I have to accept: I still have no sense of proportion with the universe or even the Milky Way’s place in it no matter how many sci-fi things I watch. I know the probability of life (even microbial) is huge out there. Having another cold one as we speak.
I get blown away when I look at the city from on top the mountain, there is so much going on in just that small area that I don’t think I’d have enough time in my life to see, experience and discover all of it let alone what’s beyond the atmosphere.
It is crasy how much Space junk is around earth and moon.
It is a problem and NASA has an whole group tasked with tracking space junk(debris).
See info here:
There was also an Anime about this subject taking place just a few years into the future:
Were thy are collecting space junk to keep space safe.
I’m bad at explaining and bad with words, so I will let Andrew McCarthy do it for me:
FYI, until we have some sort of continuous human presence on the moon, spacecraft crashing into it is extremely beneficial for science and not harmful whatsoever. Derelict spacecraft gouging a small crater in a sterile planetary body is a non-issue. It’s also been happening for decades, but I see this story being spun as a negative simply because SpaceX is attached to it. While this isn’t intentional, it was always a potential outcome of where this upper stage was left after successful delivering its mission payloads (2 lunar landers). This was the most efficient way to execute that mission.
I’ve seen crazy claims such as this affecting tides on Earth or knocking the moon off its orbit. Absolute nonsense. The moon is the size of a small planet, and the worst that will happen is a crater a bit larger than a backyard swimming pool will be created. We do far worse things to our own planet on a daily basis.
There will be many more of these events until circumstances (human lunar presence) require preventing it.
While I completely agree that space junk is an issue, you should not forget that SpaceX is trying to figure out a solution for it, likely a modified Starship version will be used.
Just because you don’t agree with the CEO, you should not forget that things like these happen all the times not just with SpaceX, but because it’s SpaceX and “Elon = eeeeeeviiil” the media has a field day with it
"On Wednesday (5), the 8,000-pound SpaceX rocket’s upper stage, the size of a school bus, hit the Moon’s surface.
The impact had the power of three tons of TNT, sending out ‘a cloud of debris and dust"
The moon will ring like a bell.
Sounds familiar.
Perhaps if MuskRat™ keeps this up, he’ll get Quasimodo turning in his grave. Quote from linked Wikipedia article:
Due to the loud ringing of the bells, Quasimodo also becomes deaf
…although I’m not certain he actually cried “The Bells!!!” like in the parodies. ![]()
Luckily for him, Mr Quasimodo probably isn’t actually buried on the Moon.
