A news story about the German “Sendung mit der Maus”, roughly translated to “Programme (or show) with the mouse”, which is a very famous German kids tv show running for 50 years now.

This brings back memories, I grew up with “der Maus”, my favourite was the elephant, perhaps if the mouse and his friends spoke, I was better in speaking German?

The average age of the “Maus” viewers is around 40. I think it is really difficult these days to find a tv show with more or less the same concept for such a long time:

  • the two languages in the intro (German and any other one, even Klingon one day),
  • the stories (stripes in the toothpaste is a classic),
  • and of course the mouse/elephant/duck cartoons (especially the ultra flexible tail of the mouse)

It did not change compared to the time when I was a kid myself which is already 40 years ago.

Was it translated to Dutch or with subtitles?

No, my family watched a lot of British and German tv, because back then Dutch TV were just three channels, so German, Belgian and British public broadcasters have been the standard package for I can remember in the Netherlands.

So I watched die Sendung mit der Maus in the late seventies and early eighties on WDR or ZDF, I don’t remember which one it was. (Was it on both back then?)

As a family, we watched Derrick and der Alte together back then, that’s why I can understand and even read German very well, but my “Sprache” is terrible.

It was (and still is) on ARD and WDR.

Same in Germany, but later we were able to get some Belgium and Dutch channels. And yes, I came across Derrick there, too!

Aquaman. It’s currently free on Amazon Prime in the UK.

… was crap. Terrible audio - couldn’t really work out what people were saying most of the time. Many of the story arcs would have been considered dated about 10 years ago. Glad I didn’t pay money to go to the cinema to see it.
