I listened the The Prez (Lester Young) and Oscar Peterson together today. Shepp fits right into the late afternoon landscape I got going today.
This is intriguing. The trombone is chatting in the background imitating cars and city sounds. The sax is the voices and the city itself. The percussion and bass is both. All I visualize is a movie camera panning all over the faces and action of a daytime cityscape. Not dreamlike. In realtime.
It feels like one of those excellent 70’s movies where the nervy jazz soundtrack would un-nerve you. Like in Dirty Harry or something.
I went the distance too and was never bored. I added this to my playlist. It’s too avant-garde and brilliant improv to be a Lester/Oscar set but it still fits into that style but oh so different. The part where they stop and refuel at the 13:15 area is astounding.
