King Crimson, Starless and Bible Black (1974), ā€œFractureā€

I have listened to this track perhaps a hundred times, but it continues to excite me with every listen. There’s a vocal ā€œyelpā€ in the recording near the 8:30 mark, a climax within a very intense section of the music that begins near the 7:40 mark, emerging after a very quite passage. I know with every listen that the ā€œyelpā€ is coming, but my heart is racing every time I hear it.

Indeed, that transition from quiet to intense near the 7:40 mark startles me with every listen, one of my favorite musical moments, ever.

Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out! (1966)

Well, I’m about to get upset from watching my TV
Checking out the news until my eyeballs fail to see
I mean to say that every day is just another rotten mess
And when it’s gonna change, my friend, is anybody’s guess

So I’m watching and I’m waiting, hoping for the best
Even think I’ll go to praying every time I hear them saying
That there’s no way to delay that trouble coming every day

Blow your harmonica, Son!

ā€œTrouble Every Dayā€ (which was written by Zappa in 1965) references the 1965 riots in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.

From the same album:

You rise each day the same old way
And join your friends out on the street
Spray your hair and think you’re neat
I think your life is incomplete
But maybe that’s not for me to say
They only pay me here to play

You paint your face and then you chase
To meet the gang where the action is
Stomp all night and drink your fizz
Roll your car and say, ā€œGee whiz!ā€
You tore a big hole in your convertible top
What will you tell your Mom and Pop?

(ā€œMom, I tore a big hole in the convertible!ā€)

Frank Zappa plays the bicycle in 1963:

This is another good track from King Crimson. I really like this track it’s great to listen and plenty in it to keep you grasped while it is playing. I like a lot of music from King Crimson, a lot of it is done exceptionally well for me.

Probably one of my favorite bands to listen to whether it’s just to listen to, or doing art or some other activity.

I’ve been a fan and follower of Ren’s music since the very early days of the pandemic… several years before ā€œHi Ren.ā€ So I knew of REN, had favorite songs for a good long time before that fateful day ā€œHi Renā€ hit YouTube and catapulted REN into the ether. ā€œHi Renā€ deserves a revisit. It’s fu**ing BRILLIANT.

Saw the Steve Allen piece. He was a prodigy. My introduction to Zappa came with the Very Weird (to my young ears) 200 Motels. I still hum songs from that insane record.

FZ on the Joe Pine show:
Interviewer Pine: "So does your long hair make you a girl?
Young Zappa: ā€œNo more than your wooden leg makes you a table.ā€

It always blew my mind when the Zappa family asked Lou Reed to induct him into the R&R Hall of Fame. The Velvets hated all that west coast crap, especially the Dead and Zappa. The VU and the Dead did share a stage a few times. The Velvets toured N. Cal a lot and had a big following. I digress.

I have to tell you, when there’s an impromptu grunt, scream, yelp, or drawl it makes me feel glad to be alive. probably because the sound board guy didn’t fu*k with the take. you don’t get that in the prog rock arena often. I will give it a listen.
Frame by Frame still by favorite KC of all of them.

EDIT: Ok that was intense. Late 4 min mark to 7-something set this up then all instruments lapse into some trance Dead-like idle doodling but you can tell they don’t like being this unfocused. by the time the yelp comes they launch in a full out rock and roll assault which I thought was more Who-like than Crimson and also quite a rush. What a fun jam.
