The Radio Hour [Tim Hort], The Radio Hour (2002, remastered in 2014), “The Killer on the Kennedy”
[I bought the CD in 2002. Today YouTube reports only 13 views!]
The lyrics refer (apparently) to a killing in Chicago that took place on the Kennedy Expressway. The lyrics mention the “L” [“El” in the liner notes that accompanied my CD], which is Chicago’s elevated transit system. [I copy below lyrics as they appeared in my CD’s liner notes. I added two words to the lyrics, which are clearly sung on the track, but do not appear in the liner notes.]
Lyrics
The taillights are stacked up to the sky.
The line between us is only thin and white.
I suppose by now you feel the dissension
Build in the air.
One shot rings over the El,
And just as I am with you here and there,
Shot two delivers you to Downtown Nowhere.
Suzanne Bartender, do not bury me alive.
I’ve seen you in the clearing,
(Those were pearls that were his eyes. Look!)
Mary, remember me as the sunlight might save me.
Would you’ve delivered me, baby,
If they had found the gun under the seat?
The taillights are stacked up to the sky.
You’re so sacramental, drop dead, boy.
For every sun in the sunset
There breeds a place for the evil seed.
Oh Mary, remember me
Sentenced to ride this broken machine,
Fading into Downtown Nowhere.
Also wonderful tracks on the same album:
