Hi,
I changed my password ($ passwd) in Terminal. The system recognizes this, but when updating through the Welcome app, I have to use the old password. If the new password is used, you get, ‘authentication error’.

Does reboot help?
Or restarting the Welcome app?

See if welcome is asking for root password . i.e. change password for root
sudo passwd root
