Wayland nVidia

Just a heads up for anybody interested in using Wayland with an nVidia card.

The 495.44 nvidia driver has been moved into testing, the 495.44 driver should now give better support for Wayland:

  • Added support for the GBM API. This adds the new symlink nvidia-drm_gbm.so pointing to the file libnvidia-allocator.so.VERSION to implement a GBM backend driver usable with the GBM loader from the Mesa project version 21.2 and above, as well as the files libnvidia-egl-gbm.so.1.1.0 and 15_nvidia_gbm.json, which implement EGL support for the GBM platform (EGL_KHR_platform_gbm).

My guess is we should get it within the next week, unless you want to switch to testing and report bugs:

I will have full xwayland acceleration on gnome now for apps that do not support wayland natively :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

My hopes are I can finally just go Sway on all my machines. That would be wonderful. On one I’m running Sway with Nouveau, because it doesn’t need to do GPU tasks. But sadly Nouveau really is bad for anything that needs a decent GPU driver.

i do not think this will make sway able to run on Nvidia driver

That never went as well as I thought it would, back to X11

*note to self, never buy nvidia again

At this stage, feature parity between amd and nvidia is the same with this driver on wayland, its just the bugs in wayland support in de that needs to be fixed.

Well, according to some Nvidia developers, sway runs out of the box for them. We will see in a week or two how well it will run.
