Vintage Stereo Gear - Is it dead?

@UncleSpellbinder - you might enjoy this blog, much of the equipment is from before stereo was a thing!

The vintage pair of Canton GLE 70 speakers which I’ve got are 3 way. With 10.25" woofers. 9.5 kgs each.

Which is quite funny, as the footprint of the Fosi Audio v3 amplifier that I’m using to drive them is smaller than a 3.5" internal drive, the amplifier itself (w/o the power supply) isn’t much larger than my hand.

I don’t have any issues driving those speakers with this relatively new Class-D amplifier. The speakers are designed for 70 watts, 120 watt peak. With the right power supply (48V, 5Amps) this small amp could even drive beefier speakers.

I do

Glorious when paired with my vintage Polk RT1000p, CS400 and FX500 for 5.1 surround connected to a Yamaha RX-V3900 AV receiver

Well I do have a Paradigm PS-1000 which I use for movies. But likely I would switch to smaller fronts to use the sub allot more. Sometimes I just want to hear the speakers and not all the digital manipulation. So Stereo mode for music and nothing else. Sade - The Ultimate Collection on CD comes to mind.

They are not vintage. but my subs are 10 inchers, albeit they are part of my truck sound system.

Admittedly I live in a digital world with a crossover of 80 Hz, so not really vintage I guess, although my speakers are over 20 years old and my receiver is from the early days of 3d tv

And I use Dolby tech to listen to stereo music in surround more often than not, feel it fills the room better, but to each their own I imagine others may say

Very nice. Did you build the speaker box yourself? IS there a reason both speakers are on the left and not on opposite ends?

I know what you mean. I acquired a used Denon AVRx3100 to replace my SA-DA8 (which is now dedicated to music only. So I have been playing with the crossovers like you have.

I had a shop build the box. I was living in an apartment at the time… The wiring; that s just the way it turned out. I didn t run enough power wire initially, so the distribution block is not centered either. and I was short on speaker wire. It s no problem with subs though. They are omnidirectional. You can t tell where the bass is coming from. I kind of mickey moused it all, but in the end it worked out well.

My Arc Audio Arc4150 CXLR 4-Channel amplifier. It ran the first sound system in my truck. It s on the young side, but 24 years old is vintage.

Thank you for sharing your setup and photos.

It is really interesting seeing peoples setups and how they have evolved. I use to see this more when I worked for Radio Shack in the day, meeting many a hobbiest. Something I miss now that my job is more about software and services.
