Valid use of AI (very opinionated)

As some of you may remember, I hate the idea of people using AI for technical advise (because it doesn’t actually KNOW anything and often gives bad advise), however, I’m finding my mind stimulated by using tools to generate images from textual descriptions.
I am a very amateur fantasy writer, and I am finding that generating an image like this helps me better visualize (and thus describe for readers) what I have in my head.
As an example, here’s one I created this morning.
Open discussion on the idea or (I would welcome this one, and if you would rather forum-mail me vs post that’s fine too) tell me what sort of thoughts the image invokes for you..what you think the story might be here. I always enjoy insights into how others think. Be aware that violates your privacy rights (peering into your heads)!

Very Kewl.

I think one should use TOOL’s that help them accomplish their goals.

I’ve used local LLM to generate backgrounds and still do now and then. It’s nice. Here are some examples of what i’ve generated using comfy ui and some models. Feel free to use them if you want.

After that, there is the chatgpt. I’ve been arguing with it 5 minutes ago for the past half hour trying it to generate me some code that does not work. Was getting on my nerves at the end  It kept giving me bad code and I had to fix it myself. I know there are better llm (eg: claude ai) for this but i’m lazy and don’t tend to spin from one to the other. Generating stuff can be challenging and quite simple at the same time. A small prompt can do wonder sometimes and other times get annoying quickly. Again like thefrog said it’s a tool. Use it if you want or need it. Just hope it does not give you bad info like you said.

Bit silly, but first that clearly came to my mind as soon as i saw the image was:

Thats freaking Don Juan over sleeping Carlos Castaneda. He just tasted mescaline peyotes and flies over the mountains in his sleep.

Well, I don’t really want to hijack this topic.

But just let me state that it is not a valid use to build an AI supercluster in your backyard.
And powering it with more than two dozen gas turbines, as Musk has done with his xAI datacenter in Memphis. For which he essentially purchased all emergency gas turbines that has been available within North America. And these were never meant for long term use.

So, if you haven’t been aware of this, you may to watch this video about this controversy which is still ongoing from what I can tell.

Other than that: If your use of AI is “valid” or not… a few image generations won’t hurt that much. Personally, I’m not really into this. As the results that I’m seeing have a visually distinctive look.

I won’t blame someone for his use of AI in general. From the technical point of view: Self hosting is definitely a viable option, especially for image generation via stable diffusion. This could be achieved locally on most modern GPUs which have 8GBs of VRAM at least as far as I know.

If you’re into vibe coding, agentic use cases and tool calling via MCP, these would easily overwhelm regular hardware due to larger context windows.

Back to the topic and the initial picture at hand:

All I saw at first is the cleanly shaven mustache of the old man - which won’t fit the usual depictions of Native Americans. Same applies to the jeans the younger one is wearing obviously. No clue what the stuff around his belt buckle could be.

Last but not least : There are no matches in the world that would visually outshine the light of the sun, even if the sun has almost set completely. As a photo, you wouldn’t be able to recreate it. Even if you’re able to source that light emitting amulet the elder is wearing around his neck.

Yes, the fallacies of AI
However, it still helps me provide better descriptions, though certainly is not a necessary tool.

Curious if anyone has any success with Cursor IDE for programming. I just heard of it and haven’t tried but everything else I have used has been meh for programming.

Not with Cursor. But I’ve tested Claude Code as well as self-hosting with LM Studio. LM Studio didn’t really include a clear and easy path towards AI coding assistance, as they don’t push MCP integrations. They support it. But you’ld have to set them up manually. For serious use, the 8GBs of VRAM that I’ve got are pretty limiting. Therefore, context windows would be limited and I don’t see a financially viable option to upgrade to 32gbs of VRAM which would be required to achieve “non dial-up” speeds in token generation.

As the Model Context Protocol is more or less the brain child of Anthropic, they actually integrated their implementations in Claude Code as well as for their regular clients as artifacts. I didn’t actually liked the fact that the CLI of Claude Code isn’t sandboxed by default.

Only tested it for one week and it was pretty obvious that I would have to tinker around with it for some more time to get something useful out of it. With additional fine tuning further down the road. During my week of testing, it became more or less clear that their Pro plan has its limits, if you won’t use the latest model, you would be able to stretch it a bit further. What I didn’t liked is the fact that they don’t offer a tier in between their pro and max plan. And I’m definitely not going to invest $100 on a max subscription out of curiosity.

Anyway, before you check out Claude Code or Cursor, one useful insight during my testing was that the unofficial subreddit /r/ClaudeAI posts their latestworkaroundreport on a weekly basis which is an aggregation of various sources such as the most recent bug reports or other findings on the subs related to claude code as well as other sources such as github and other sites.

Well, it’s Independence Day here in Finland, so…

I generally dislike A.I. created music, especially covers. But this A.I. cover of System Of A Down’s “Chop Suey!” is absolutely brilliant.

On the other hand, while there is fun to be had with A.I., there’s also this…

As long as you use AI only as a tool to get your very own ideas realized it’s ok, but those results should be watermarked as AI content. Nobody has a problem in using a chainsaw instead of an handdriven one.
But I’m really sceptical if AI becomes a teacher or guide, that’s when things start to go wrong.

I encounter it every day nowadays as a person with a service job. People play around with critical stuff without any background knowledge, cause AI animates them to do so. That’s a massiv risk and sometimes increases workload instead of helping to prevent it.

ATM AI is becoming somewhat of a religion 2.0, that’s spooky. Only my opinion.

If AI serves as your muse in the creation of your art then I vote valid,

I write, and it would never even occur to me that AI could serve as muse…but my best stuff comes on the bus or at the bus stop so that’s just as valid i.e. your best stuff probably does not come from bus or bus stop.

so if it helps you get to that level you need to be at to create, more power to you

EDIT:

agree :100:

Unbelievable ….

I find this totally disgusting!

Edit: I’m referring to the Wasteland Video & Musk!

You’re right cause it makes chopping up the bodies so much easier.

Like I just posted in another thread: I m just waiting for the Frankenstein AI from some anonymous bad actor :face_with_peeking_eye:

That’s what I meant with “it becomes religion 2.0”. If you train your model with your very own ideology and it gets highly biased, chances are a big amount of people will follow it blindly without questioning it, as with religion and/or sects in the past. This is already happening. People rely on the results because they can’t assess or refute them themselves.

Definitely.

And it really shows that Musk isn’t really an environmentalist. He could have plastered that data center in solar panels or could have waited until the facility had more than the initial 8 MW grid connection.

But he opted to deploy mobile gas turbines which aren’t meant for permanent installation and exploited an loop hole in the process, as those mobile units aren’t subject to the same emissions regulations as an conventional natural gas plant would be. And due to the fact that they’re non-permanently installed, they didn’t required a permit. He did all that, Just to get that data center up and running as soon as possible.

Essentially just to be part of the AI craze and to catch up to OpenAI, google and the other companies which are already years ahead of XAi and which already have secured their deals with the data center providers.

When told from those data center providers that I would take at least 18-24 months to deploy a new data center of this magnitude, Musks mindset interpreted that he won’t be able to catch up with the competition and won’t get a foothold in the market.

In short, that is the fear of missing out, nothing else. Thus, investing billions into a gigantic GPU compute cluster, just to outpace the competition in terms of compute capacity, to be deployed asap, without a plan of organic growth.

In the meanwhile, the Chinese have shown with Deepseek that the model training stages could be performed without access to the latest and greatest computing clusters. Simply by optimization of the training stage itself, not by throwing more computation resources at the problem.
